Some people retire. Dave just changed how he serves his community.

He began donating whole blood back in the late seventies, added regular platelet donations in the eighties, and hasn’t slowed down since.

After retiring, Dave became a volunteer hospital services driver with Vitalant in 2016, making sure lifesaving blood products reach the patients who need them most.

With 15 years of service as a Reserve Deputy with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Dave knows the importance of stepping up for his community.

“Being a volunteer is something I have done most of my life,” he says.

Olivia made her Sweet 16 unforgettable by making it about others.

For her 16th birthday, she gave blood for the first time, inspired by her sister who is a regular donor. Olivia even encouraged her dad to donate for the first time on her special day, turning her birthday into a family celebration of giving.

When your purpose is saving lives, it doesn’t stop at a job change.

After 18 years with Vitalant, Rhonda’s passion for blood donation didn’t end when she moved into her role as Volunteer Services Manager at her local hospital. It grew even stronger.

Now, she coordinates quarterly blood drives for hospital employees and leads their annual “Rock ’N Roll Up Your Sleeve” event every June, complete with Elvis flair and lifesaving results. Between caring for patients and supporting staff, Rhonda makes sure everyone gets a chance to give.

“I’ve seen the need for blood on both a personal and professional level,” she says. “It’s the blood already on the shelves that saves lives.”

For 35 years, Harold inspired others to donate. This time, generosity gave back.

A retired teacher and long-time blood drive coordinator, Harold has spent decades guiding students and neighbors to roll up a sleeve and help others. His impact spans generations of donors who learned the value of community through his example.

Earlier this year, he coordinated a church blood drive and decided to donate during the event. What he didn’t know was that his act of giving would enter him into Vitalant’s annual Car Giveaway. A few weeks later, he got the call: he had won.

Harold didn’t start donating to win prizes. He started because he believed in giving back. The same spirit of giving that’s saved countless lives brought something remarkable his way.

Her husband needed hundreds of transfusions to survive. So she made it her mission to give back.

When LaVonne’s husband, Richard, was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, blood transfusions became his lifeline. Generous donors made it possible for him to keep fighting.

Grateful for those who gave, LaVonne started donating herself, and later began organizing blood drives at her church. Years later, she’s reached a milestone of 16 gallons donated.
