Never miss a Monday workout, right?!

It sets the tone for the week and clears my mind after a busy day.

I had a busy weekend and didn’t feel my best.

I warmed up and picked three exercises that I am good at and got warm up.

1. I am good at a lot of body weight exercises due to my relative strength, so chin ups were number one. I am still rehabbing a neck injury that took about 40% strength from my left arm, so I am working on 5 second hold at the top and a 4 second eccentric lowering to get back to where I was.

2. I needed a lower body exercise and prefer something that gets my heart rate up. I loaded up and away I went. Watch out for that sled!

3. Last, but not least I lowered my heart rate by focusing on one of my rehab exercises for the neck. Perfect time to catch my breath while focusing on slow and controlled movements in a difficult pattern.

The point is, you don’t always have 30, 45 minutes or an hour to workout. You don’t always have to follow your program. Some movement is better than no movement.

Barbara is performing a rotational step and punch, or reach. She performs a similar movement routinely at home when putting dishes away. As we get…older, power declines faster than muscle and power is a major factor in fall prevention. We added the hurdle and lightened the load, so she could move fluid with control.

A thorough assessment can provide so much insight not just to me, but especially the client. John came to me because he felt out of shape and noticed his legs getting weaker when getting up from the floor and out of a chair. Here he is maintaining a split squat position, which is no easy task, but it only gets harder if you avoid it! I use progressions to help people move better and feel better regardless of injury or where they are in life. This is a great way to build stability before dynamic strength and mimics the way we get down and up from the floor.

A few weeks ago, we deloaded from the heavier weights and focused on instability. Training for instability does not have to involve balance pads or BOSU balls and can be done with a single-sided exercise like this, where there is an emphasis on single leg balance by lifting the knee at the top of the step up. Exercises like these help you develop better balance, coordination, and efficiency.

Stick mobility is an awesome tool that allows you to get into different positions than normal by using leverage. Here is Betty in the dead bug position using the stick to develop core stability and isometric strength. Almost each position requires a pulling or pushing of the sticks to activate muscles throughout the kinetic chain, even your nervous system!

Peter is performing with one of the toughest variations of a body saw using a slider. Using the slider at the feet turns the focus to the lower abdominals that are contracting to keep the body in a straight line to protect the back and hips. He works hard and continues to make progress!

One of the biggest complaints from some of my older clients is a fear of falling. Of course, there is no one size fits all approach, but enhancing your awareness, or proprioception, is a great way to prevent a future fall. This is a great drill to work on with 6-inch hurdles to mimic stepping back from the street onto a curb behind you and trusting yourself!

Power is obviously a necessary component in the golf swing, but most people try to swing as fast as they can with their arms. Power is actually built from the ground up using ground reaction forces and is a quick movement. Here, the girls are working on broad jumps, a horizontal movement, which is a nice change of pace from the often-utilized vertical box jumps. It also emphasizes hip extension, which is what happens at club impact.
