Did you know that kids with myopic parents are 2 to 3 times more likely to be myopic than kids without myopic parents?

Myopia, which causes things at distance to be blurry, occurs when light rays converge in front of the retina. This happens due to increasing length of the eye- as kids grow, their eyes grow too.

Why does myopia matter? Yes, the higher your prescription, the thicker your glasses. But did you know that people who are myopic are also at significant risk for developing serious eye diseases such as glaucoma, retinal detachment, and myopic degeneration?

And did you know there are ways to actually *slow down* myopia now? Studies show that orthokeratology (overnight retainers), specific daytime soft contact lenses, and low-dose atropine eye drops slow down myopia progression. Glasses alone do not slow down myopia. Finding the best treatment can significantly improve a child's quality of life!

Vision screenings, such as those offered at schools or pediatrician offices, are not a substitute for seeing an optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam. If your eye doctor doesn't offer ortho-k, they're simply not serious about myopia management. At Eyecare Center of DuPage, we prescribe all available myopia treatments, and choose based on what's best for each kid.
