Like pieces of a puzzle, each act of kindness helps complete a bigger picture—one filled with compassion, dignity, and humanity. Because of you, patients feel comfort instead of fear and families feel supported in their hardest moments.

Please pause with us as we remember one of our own angels.💙💙
From our CEO, Shelley Cartwright:
Today, I share with a heavy heart the loss of one of our own—an extraordinary hospice nurse who dedicated her life to caring for others in their most vulnerable moments.

In hospice, we often say that our nurses are angels on earth. They bring comfort, dignity, and peace not only to patients, but to entire families. Their work is not easy—it requires deep compassion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to doing the next right thing, even on the hardest days.

Lenise embodied all of this and more. For over a decade, she showed us what it truly means to serve with heart. She led with kindness, always putting others first, and had a remarkable way of making people feel seen, valued, and cared for. Her impact on our patients, their families, and our team will never be forgotten.

While we grieve this tremendous loss, we also honor her life and the legacy she leaves behind. In many ways, it feels like she has earned her wings—continuing her care in a different way, beyond what we can see.
And to hospice nurses everywhere—thank you. Your work matters more than words can express.

The APEX team will continue to carry forward her spirit by caring deeply, showing up fully, and leading with compassion every single day.

Sometimes, being present is the most important gift that a person can give a hospice patient. Presence conveys worth and helps preserve the dignity of the dying person.
You don’t have to talk, you don’t have to be entertaining, you don’t even need to bring a gift. Just show up!
Dying alone is becoming more common as more seniors age without family support due to divorce, widowhood, or being childless.
You can bring dignity through your presence. Volunteer at APEX Hospice and help preserve the inherent value and dignity of another human being.
