What's Pink Eye? 👁️‍🗨️

Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is an inflammation of the clear membrane that covers the white part of your eye and the inside of your eyelids. It often makes the eye appear red or pink, feel itchy, and produce a discharge. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergies.

Symptoms include:
Redness or a pink tint to the eye

Itching or a gritty feeling

Watery eyes or a thick discharge

Crusting of the eyelids or lashes, especially in the morning

If you think you have pink eye, it's crucial to be seen by a healthcare professional. We can determine the cause and recommend the right treatment, which may include eye drops. Viral pink eye is highly contagious, so we'll also provide guidance on how to prevent its spread.

Bee and Insect Sting: Urgent Care Evaluation and Management

Bee and insect stings are a common occurrence, but they can range from a minor annoyance to a medical emergency. Our urgent care clinic is equipped to evaluate and manage both mild and moderate reactions

When to Seek Urgent Care

You should visit an urgent care clinic if you experience any of the following symptoms:

Large Local Reactions (LLRs): Swelling that extends beyond the sting site, or a large, painful, and inflamed area that lasts for several days.

Worsening Symptoms: If your symptoms don't improve with home care, or if you develop signs of a secondary infection like pus, red streaks, or a fever.

Multiple Stings: If you have been stung multiple times, which can cause a more significant reaction.

Follow-Up Care

After your urgent care visit, our team will provide you with a detailed care plan. If you've had a significant allergic reaction, we may recommend a follow-up with an allergist to discuss testing and preventative treatments, such as immunotherapy or carrying an epinephrine auto-injector.

Recognizing and Treating Impetigo: Walk-In Care for Skin Infections

Impetigo is a common, highly contagious skin infection, particularly prevalent in children but can affect adults too. It often starts as red sores that quickly burst, leaving honey-colored crusts. While not usually serious, impetigo can be itchy, uncomfortable, and spread easily if not treated promptly.

At Immediate Care Center of Westmont, we're equipped to diagnose and treat various skin conditions, including impetigo, with convenient walk-in care. If you or your child develop suspicious skin sores, it's important to get them evaluated to prevent further spread and complications.

Signs and Symptoms of Impetigo:

Red sores: Often around the nose and mouth, but can appear anywhere on the body.

Blisters: The sores may quickly develop into small, fluid-filled blisters.

Honey-colored crusts: Once the blisters burst, they leave characteristic golden-brown crusts.

Itching: The affected areas can be very itchy.

Spreading: The sores can spread rapidly to other parts of the body or to other individuals through close contact.

Why Choose Immediate Care for Impetigo?

Our experienced providers can quickly assess the rash, confirm if it's impetigo, and initiate the right treatment. This is crucial because:

Contagion: Early treatment helps prevent the infection from spreading to others.

Comfort: Treatment alleviates discomfort and speeds healing.

Complications: Untreated impetigo can sometimes lead to more serious skin infections or, rarely, kidney problems.

What to Expect at Immediate Care Center of Westmont:

During your visit, our team will:

Examine the affected skin: A visual inspection is usually enough to diagnose impetigo.

Prescribe antibiotics: Impetigo is almost always treated with antibiotics, either topical (cream or ointment) or oral (pills), depending on the severity and extent of the infection.

Provide care instructions: We'll give you clear instructions on how to care for the infected skin, hygiene practices to prevent spreading, and when to follow up.

Don't let impetigo become a bigger problem for your family. Visit Immediate Care Center of Westmont for a quick diagnosis and effective treatment. We're dedicated to helping our community in Westmont, Burr Ridge, Downers Grove, and surrounding areas stay healthy and comfortable.

A cold sore can be more than just a cosmetic concern; it can be painful, uncomfortable, and frankly, a nuisance! Caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1), cold sores often appear as small, fluid-filled blisters on or around the lips. While they typically clear up on their own, the process can be sped up and symptoms managed with prompt treatment.

At Immediate Care Center of Westmont, we understand the discomfort cold sores can cause, and we're here to help! If you're experiencing the tingling, itching, or pain of an emerging or active cold sore, our urgent care center offers walk-in evaluation and treatment.

When to Consider Urgent Care for a Cold Sore:

First-time outbreak: If you've never had a cold sore before, it's a good idea to get it checked to confirm the diagnosis and discuss prevention.

Severe symptoms: If your cold sore is unusually large, extremely painful, or spreading.

Frequent outbreaks: If you're experiencing cold sores often, we can discuss strategies to help reduce their recurrence.

Compromised immune system: If you have a weakened immune system due to other health conditions or medications, cold sores can be more severe.

Eye involvement: Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect the cold sore is affecting your eye.

What to Expect at Immediate Care Center of Westmont:

Our experienced providers will evaluate your symptoms and determine the best course of action. Treatment typically involves:

Antiviral medications: Oral antiviral drugs can help speed up healing and reduce the severity and frequency of outbreaks, especially if started at the first sign of a tingle.

Topical creams: Antiviral creams may also be prescribed or recommended to apply directly to the cold sore.

Pain management: Advice on over-the-counter pain relievers and soothing remedies to ease discomfort.

Prevention tips: Guidance on how to avoid triggers and minimize future outbreaks.

Don't wait for a cold sore to run its full course. Visit Immediate Care Center of Westmont for quick, compassionate care. We're here to help you feel better, faster!

Coughing is one of the most common symptoms bringing patients to urgent care. While often a minor annoyance, it can also signal a more serious condition. Differentiating between the causes—such as allergies, bronchitis, or pneumonia—is key to effective treatment.

Evaluation in Urgent Care

When you come in with a cough, the provider will first ask a series of questions to understand the nature of your cough:

Duration: How long have you been coughing?

Type of cough: Is it dry and hacking, or productive (bringing up phlegm)? What color is the phlegm?

Associated symptoms: Do you have a fever, body aches, sore throat, or shortness of breath?

Allergies: Do you have a history of seasonal allergies or asthma?

Medications: Are you taking any medications, particularly ACE inhibitors for blood pressure, which can cause a dry cough?

Environmental factors: Have you been exposed to irritants like smoke, dust, or pollen?

A physical examination will follow, including listening to your lungs with a stethoscope to check for wheezing, crackles, or other abnormal sounds. In some cases, a chest X-ray may be ordered to get a clearer picture of your lungs, especially if pneumonia is suspected. A rapid strep or flu test may also be done to rule out those infections.
