A Winning Spirit Wins
There is a belief that a college degree or degrees will propel one’s career and help us all to reach a high status. Where this could be true in some instances, I do believe if a survey was provided to 100 hiring managers, they would tell you that many candidates are picked because of their personality. I always think of my former co-worker that I worked with over 8 years ago. We both were contractors. Where some people really want a permanent job, I found tremendous success as a contractor. I made quite a bit more per hour versus a permanent job and many of my contracts lasted for over a year. I also had medical coverage. But what I noticed about my co-worker was his winning spirit. He kept saying...”But I am grateful.” He was extremely grateful for the temporary/contract job because he was able to provide for his household. Shortly there after, he did land a very good permanent job. Allow me to be judgy right now, I am around people 20 years younger than me in my educational setting. I am so impressed by their intelligence and zeal. They are much younger than me but look at them, they know where they are going. On a down note, I am also noticing some horrible attitudes. The attitudes are quite negative and pessimistic. Look, you can get 14 degrees, but with a bad disposition, one will not get far. You may get the job but it will lead to many conflicts. Nothing is perfect or no one is perfect. When we are in a place of need or newness, we have to be open to learn. To learn we have to be taught. To be teachable, one has to be reachable. No one is jumping up and down to teach or mentor a bad spirit. If I am in a place of hiring, I will go with the candidate with so so education and experience but a winning spirit. Versus the degreed up candidate with a bad attitude. Seriously, hear me on this one. I am amost 50 years old and I been around. I have seen a lot of bad attitudes. It does not work in the long run. Also we all need references. Think about this.
All we can do is our best and correct the things that don’t serve us and others well. Don’t get in your own way or be your own worst enemy. Get your winning spirit on and soar to heights that will blow your mind! See you up top!
