All techniques work for Chronic Achilles Rupture - but not all carry the same risk.
Study highlights:
• Similar functional gains across techniques
• Turndown flaps showed higher wound complication rates
• Hamstring and FHL transfers had lower morbidity
• Complications matter when choosing the right surgery
Proud of the FARIL-MGB team for delivering evidence that directly informs surgical decision-making

MIS Midfoot Fusion: Know Where Not to Go

• MIS = less invasive, but blind to key anatomy
• Neurovascular & tendon injury = real risk
• We mapped fluoro heatmaps of danger & safe zones
• AP & oblique views show where structures actually run

👉 Take-home: Use fluoroscopic heatmaps to operate smarter, safer, and more confidently in MIS midfoot fusion.

What Really Drives the Cost of Achilles Tendon Repair?
Our analysis of 341 Achilles tendon repairs revealed:
💸 6× difference between the cheapest and most expensive surgeries
⏱ Operative time = major cost driver
🏥 Ambulatory surgery centers = lower cost
🧵 Suture choice & surgical approach matter
⏳ Longer delay to surgery increases cost
➡️ Bottom line: Standardizing technique + reducing delays may lower costs without harming outcomes.

Meet Willem Koenders, the lead of our Bioengineering Team at FARIL 🔬✨
Willem brings extraordinary talent in 3D design & prototyping, device development, finite element modeling, simulation, and biomedical engineering.
He joined us through the FARIL–GOFAL OrthoPhD Program, a unique collaboration between MGB (mentored by Drs. Soheil Ashkani & John Kwon) and (Drs. & ).
Now a PhD candidate, Willem is dedicated to bringing cutting-edge bioengineering into orthopedic surgery—transforming ideas into innovations that elevate patient care.
Fun fact: he first joined FARIL years ago as a master’s student from the Netherlands… and now he’s leading engineering innovation at our lab. 🚀
Welcome, Willem - your vision, creativity, and engineering excellence inspire all of us!

In this review we tried to identify the key risk factors linked to physical abuse in children - helping clinicians recognize red flags earlier and protect vulnerable patients.
Take-home message: Early awareness saves lives.

Grateful to our co-authors for advancing this critical work. 🙏

FARIL Team Spotlight 🌟
We’re excited to highlight two outstanding members of our team who are helping drive innovation, research, and global collaboration at FARIL-MGB.

👨‍⚕️ Dr. Lennart Gerdesmeyer
Lennart joined us from Munich a couple of months ago and has already made a remarkable impact. With international clinical experience across Germany, Finland, and South Africa, he brings expertise in experimental orthopaedics, emerging technologies, AI-supported solutions, and trauma outcomes.
He is also a talented entrepreneur currently developing a new innovation, EagleScope (formerly MedScope). 🚀

👨‍⚕️ Dr. Daniel Szmola
Daniel joined us last week through the MGB–Semmelweis ORTHOPHD Program. He is an Orthopaedic & Traumatology resident and PhD candidate at , focusing on post-fracture rehabilitation, nutritional and training strategies in trauma patients, and mortality-risk assessment.
During his one-year stay in Boston, he will work closely with our team to advance orthopaedic science and innovation.

🙏 Special Thanks
We extend our sincere gratitude to Drs. , , Prof Bella Merkely (Semmelweis Rector), and Prof. Harris for their tremendous effort in establishing the MGB–Semmelweis OrthoPhD Program- an initiative that enables this meaningful collaborative training and R&D pathway.

We are proud to have Lennart and Daniel as part of the FARIL-MGB family and grateful for their contributions to our mission in translational orthopaedic research and innovation. 🌍🦴💡

Highlights:
• Social determinants of health such as race, insurance type, and socioeconomic status influenced postoperative outcomes in patients with Lisfranc injuries.
• Those with private insurance as well as white patients reported better postoperative physical and mental health outcomes.
• Higher social vulnerability and area deprivation were associated with lower patient-reported outcomes in physical, mental, and pain domains.
• To address these health disparities, there needs to be more targeted interventions in orthopaedic care based on neighborhood and socioeconomic factors.
