LAUGHH Foundation - GIVING FROM THE HEART
Dear Friends of LAUGHH,

My name is William Cuevas Villamizar, and I am a LAUGHH Volunteer from Colombia. Here is my story:

Hello, my name is William, and I am one of the leaders of the Colombian medical students. I joined LAUGHH when I was in my second year of medical school, simply looking for an adventure. But LAUGHH did something I never expected: it made me fall in love with serving others. It completely transformed the way I care for my patients today.

LAUGHH taught me that giving someone medication is meaningless if we don’t also teach them how to take care of themselves. That is why, in every consultation, I speak to my patients about nutrition, exercise, sexual education, and I also make sure they understand their illness. Of course, it means I run late and take longer with each patient, but every day, I watch people leave with smiles, with hope, and with knowledge that empowers them. And to me, that is priceless.

I truly believe we come into this world to help others, and every time I participate in a LAUGHH mission, that belief becomes stronger. I have been working with LAUGHH since 2019, and in every mission we hear the same words: “No one has ever shown us so much love.” Many people in these communities rarely visit a doctor because it requires long and difficult travel. And when they finally manage to go, consultations last only 20 minutes, and patients leave without understanding their own illnesses.
I will never forget a patient who had spent more than 30 years without seeing a doctor because the nearest one had left town. Thanks to LAUGHH, he was finally able to receive follow-up care for his diabetes.
It is truly incredible to see people from outside our country travel so many miles just to help our communities, something that even our own government sometimes fails to do. Their example reminds us of something simple but powerful: we come into this world to help others.

I speak on behalf of all the students when I say that LAUGHH inspires us. If foreigners are willing to help our people, how could we as Colombians not be willing to do the same? That is why I am, and will continue to be, a LAUGHH volunteer for as long as life allows me.

My country has many people in need who do not have access to a doctor and who walk for hours through the mountains when they hear that a LAUGHH mission is near. During a mission in 2019, I remember a 78-year-old woman who had walked three hours to reach the foundation. Her shoes were torn and worn—she was practically barefoot. Without thinking twice, I gave her the Crocs I was wearing.
In every mission, we meet patients with wounds that have not healed for years, people who have built their own walking sticks from bamboo, improvised wheelchairs, or those who have been limping for decades because they cannot afford a walker. And the moment we arrive, we change lives—not only the lives of the patients, but also the lives of every member of our mission.

GIVING FROM THE HEART helps us to remember that

"HOPE AND CONNECTION CAN TRANSCEND DISTANCE, LAUNGUAGE, AND CIRCUMSTANCE."

Have awonderful holiday seadon and a fabulous 2026 – blessings to you from all of us.

LAUGHH Foundation - GIVING FROM THE HEART
Dear Friends of LAUGHH,

Tonnie Warfield is the Program Manager in the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Department at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore – and she is a LAUGHH volunteer.

Here’s her stories:

El Carmen de Chucuri, Colombia – June, 2025

I have had the pleasure of working as the wound nurse the past two LAUGHH Missions. While the mission is only 5 days, I spend the rest of the year collecting donations from other wound nurses, hospitals and even patients. I figure out what wound care and ostomy supplies we may need, based on previous years. And, we accept donations of all sorts of things, not knowing what we may see. My patients back home have become quite supportive and send me out with their unused ostomy supplies, hoping that they can make a difference.

Recently one of my urostomy patients donated a large amount of urostomy bags, some overnight drainage systems and leg straps to the mission.

At the end of the very first day, in El Carmen De Chuchuri, I met a very special little boy. I believe he was between 4-7 years old. His father presented him, incontinent of urine, wearing an absorbent diaper to his abdomen. He had what you call a vesicostomy, which is an opening in the bladder to the abdomen that was surgically created, secondary to a congenital disorder.

Right away I introduced this young boy and his father to a urostomy appliance. I taught the father how to cut the appliance to fit around the small draining stoma, and we applied it. He was able to p*e standing up for the first time in his life - now like other boys his age! What a difference for this young boy! Both the son and father had large smiles. I had to hold back my tears. It was a wonderful moment. I gave them all of the urostomy appliances I had in my supplies.

Patients who have ostomies in Colombia have a difficult time coming by adequate supplies. With supplies from her patients in the states, Tonnie was able to help a patient with fresh ostomy supplies and an abdominal binder to help manage his hernia. Right away he smiled and hugged me saying he never thought he would feel this clean again.

It is a truly special day when you can say that you and your patients donated to so many individuals on a medical mission! It is such an honor to be a part of LAUGHH, and to be a part of such a wonderful medical mission.

What wonderful stories!!! As we approach this holiday season, we send a reminder that GIVING FROM THE HEART helps us remember that

“HOPE AND CONNECTION CAN TRANSCEND DISTANCE, LANGUAGE, AND CIRCUMSTANCE.”

Have a blessed holiday season – blessings from all of us!

LAUGHH Foundation - GIVING FROM THE HEART
Dear Friends of LAUGHH,

We want to share a story with you that happened during the 2025 Healthy Living Trip. This was sent to us by Pedro Gonzalez, a volunteer on this trip.

Meeting Andrey in El Carmen de Chucurí, Colombia

This summer, while serving on a medical mission with LAUGHH Mission in El Carmen de Chucurí, a small town in the Santander region of Colombia, I had an experience that deeply touched me. During our time there, our team provided medical support to people who rarely have access to such care. It was there that I met Andrey, a 21-year-old young man who had recently lost a leg and was struggling to come to terms with his amputation.

As an amputee myself, I could see the uncertainty in his eyes — the worry about what life would look like moving forward. When Andrey saw me walking confidently with my prosthetic, traveling, and serving on the mission, something shifted. He realized that his life could still be full of movement, purpose, and joy.

Access to prosthetics in Colombia is extremely limited and prohibitively expensive, so I decided to donate one of my spare mechanical prosthetics to Andrey this Christmas. We’ve stayed in touch since the trip, and it’s been inspiring to see his spirit lift and his confidence grow.

Meeting Andrey reminded me that sometimes the most meaningful impact we can make is simply showing someone what’s possible. For me, this encounter was both humbling and deeply fulfilling –

a reminder that hope and connection can transcend distance, language, and circumstance.

What a beautiful story!! As you approach the holiday season, we send a reminder that GIVING BACK FROM THE HEART helps us remember that

"HOPE AND CONNECTION CAN TRANSCEND

DISTANCE, LANGUAGE, AND CIRCUMSTANCE".

Have a Blessed Christmas, Hannakah, wherever your heart and sould take you – blessings from all of us!

I need your help! LAUGHH Foundation is doing our annual fundraiser on Saturday, September 27! It is very different this year. We are bringing in a famous magician for 2 shows.

The Kid-Family-friendly show is from 2-4pm. Lots of close-up illusions and audience participation accompanied by lots of LAUGHHs! Magical, healthy, fun snacks will keep everyone's energy at a high level. There is also an opportunity for a few of the kids to meet with the magician to learn some magic and how he got into doing magic!

The evening show, 7:30-9:30pm, is still family-friendly except for younger kids. The straight-jacket escape can be a little too much for little guys and gals. Wine, other beverages, and charcuterie treats will keep the nourishment levels up! Lots of audience participation and LAUGHHs galore will make the evening a truly MAGICAL event for all!

Aron Houdini (YES! HOUDINI!) is coming to Kansas City! He is the great-great-nephew of HARRY HOUDINI! He's been doing magic since he was 5! He has LOTS of Magic World Records! He has a licensed Las Vegas show! We are so lucky to have him!!!

How can you help? Share this with everyone! Check your calendars and make plans to join us! Only 75 seats are available for each show, so don't miss out!

All funds go to support our mission to help people live healthier, happier lives. The funds not only support our health and wellness missions in Colombia, South America, but also our efforts beginning here in Kansas City to get our kids eating great food from scratch in their schools! This is a huge push and one we desperately need! That's the MAGIC when we make TYPE 2 Diabetes DISAPPEAR!
