💛Two years ago, the Sustainable Solutions course was launched to empower students to take action and make our school district more sustainable. Since its inception, students in the class have accomplished a number of impressive projects, including
🥕restoring the school vegetable garden and greenhouse
🏡building a 12x20 ft. garden shed
🐝designing and creating a pollinator garden in the courtyard
🤎initiating cafeteria composting across the district, ♻️and revamping the school’s recycling protocols to ensure recyclable items stay out of the waste stream.

💛All of these projects have been self-funded through product sales, grant writing, and fundraising efforts by the students themselves.
Our largest fundraiser is the Legacy Daffodil Trail, where parents purchase daffodil bulbs on behalf of their son or daughter, which are then planted on campus in the fall. In the spring, these bulbs bloom into a beautiful display that will last for years to come, creating a lasting legacy. Your child can return to campus year after year to visit their dedicated section of the trail.

💛 Bulbs can be purchased in sets of 6 for $25, but feel free to purchase as many as you’d like (larger sets create a more striking visual impact).
Payment can be made in one of two ways:
1. Via Venmo: -25 (please include the student’s name, the number of bulbs desired, and a contact email in case of any issues).
2. By cash or check: Checks can be made payable to Weston High School and mailed to:
Michael Aitkenhead
115 School Rd.
Weston, CT 06883
Please include a note with your student’s name, the number of bulbs desired, and a contact email.

💛We need to plant the bulbs before Thanksgiving, so the ordering deadline is Friday, November 15th.Please don’t delay!

Good day from COMPOST BEACH! ⛱ This morning we had our first Compost Giveback from Weston's Food Scrap Recycling Program. The 235 program participants were invited to pick up one bucket of compost produced from the scraps they have dropping off. 4 months into the program, a total of 11,430 lbs/5.7 tons of food scraps have been hauled to the recycling facility and turned into compost. 🪴🥗 Each month has seen an increase of approximately 300 pounds. This is significant diversion from the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) stream and an example of a closed loop cycle. Grow. Eat. Compost. Repeat. 🎆Another Compost Beach event will be held Saturday 6 July 8:30AM to 12:30PM at the transfer station. Sign in desk will again be located by the red container. Open to program participants and to anyone who signs up between now and through Saturday 6th. Sign up here: hrra.org/organics-food-scraps-weston/

💚Planting the Seeds of Change💚
🌼The students of Weston High School’s Sustainable Living class are fundraising to create a pollinator garden in one of their courtyards.
🐝The goal of the project is to create an interactive ecosystem where students can get hands-on experience with wildlife and problem-solving. This is an opportunity for students to be educated outside of the classroom and foster a sense of community and responsibility. With your support, we can bring this pollinator garden to our school and provide this opportunity to our students!

I am writing to encourage you to participate in this week’s events around Weston’s NEW Food Scraps Recycling Program. Following in the footsteps of dozens of neighboring towns, the Sustainability Committee have been advocating for this for several years. The the Town of Weston, HRRA and I have been working on it for the last 3 years in a more concerted way, so am excited that it is finally here, a new service and sustainability milestone for Weston.

For more details on the program, the kit available for purchase and guidelines, click here: https://hrra.org/organics-food-scraps-weston/ Should you wish to participate, please sign up here: https://forms.office.com/r/2YnLN68Kvz

The first event is at Lachat Town Farm this Wednesday 28 February @ 7pm (doors open 6:30pm for sign-in, refreshments and mingling). It is a community meeting where our partner HRRA will present the importance of the program in terms of the CT waste crisis, show examples of other town programs and answer some questions the community may have. It is also an opportunity to get a kit. Please click here to register for this event on Lachat’s website: https://lachattownfarm.org/register.php?eventid=1747

Then Saturday 02 March will be opening day when you can start to drop off your food scraps at the Transfer Station. FYI - We have 162 households signed up to participate in the program so far. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9:15am.

Many already do backyard composting which is even more sustainable; or have a curbside pick up service. so would not make use of this program. We would appreciate if you can at least spread the word. We have to be the change we want to see in our town!

Many thanks,
Nicci Wiese

Why is reducing trash so critical right now? Connecticut is in a waste crisis. Residents are generating more garbage than there is capacity to dispose of it. Recycling food waste and organics for composting and thus diverting these materials from the waste stream is a very important step in managing...
