Beware of smartphone apps that claim to assess, diagnose or manage head injuries or concussions. The FDA recently warned that tools such as these which have been marketed to parents or coaches for use during sports are not reliable and could lead to incorrect or incomplete diagnosis.

In the case of any head injury or suspected concussion, the only way to get proper diagnosis and treatment is through a health care professional.

FALSE! Symptoms of a concussion may start immediately after an injury, but they can also appear the next day or even two or more days later. In younger athletes, there can be more of a delay between the injury and the onset of concussion symptoms.

During a recent meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association, studies were cited which found athletes who have had a concussion are 2.5 times more likely to suffer a lower extremity injury within the following year.

The connection between concussions and later injuries to the lower extremities may not be obvious, but the explanation comes from impaired coordination that is subtle and difficult to measure.

This highlights the importance of cognitive and neuromuscular baseline testing, as well as comprehensive and thorough post-concussion treatment and examination.

Reach out to us with any questions about baseline testing or if you need help being referred to a concussion specialist in your area!

Have you ever considered the connection between childhood concussions and problems with behavior, mood or personality later in life? The connection may not be obvious, but a recent article published in medicalxpress.com discusses studies which have linked cases of antisocial behavior, drug & alcohol abuse and criminality to concussions that were either misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all during childhood.

We've included a link to the article in our bio, and we recommend you check it out and pass it along to friends and family, especially those with children who may be susceptible to concussions from sports.

of this unfortunately all-too-common scenario stemming from lack of awareness of the importance of concussion treatment! Please pass this on to friends and families whose children play contact sports and help spread the word:

"Hi, my name is Brendan Verrier from Western Australia Perth and I suffered with PCS for 18 months. I play Australian Rules Football and have had 4 concussions relatively close to each other.
My very first concussion I was so unaware of what a concussion actually was I tried playing the "tough guy" mentality that's how I treated all my other injuries but a concussion injury is so different to any other injury and with myself not taking the right steps to recovery I believe that's why it took me so much longer to recover and get back to feeling human again.
The day I got concussed I kept the concussion away from the team doctors thinking it will just go away but instead I decided to go out partying that night trying to avoid the fact that I had a mild brain injury and also played the following football match the next week with symptoms still occurring in the brain. After that match playing with the symptoms I could not get out of bed for a few days and thats when I started to realise I need some serious help.
Just trying to push through it is something that I truly regret I hope people reading this take a leaf from this and learn that managing these injuries the right way is the most important thing to recovery! And so on my brain wasn't recovered properly even having a few weeks off playing football and feeling symptom free I went back playing still too early and kept getting concussions.
I started to seek help and Dr. Molly Parker was a huge help guiding me on the right track while a lot of people were just telling me to rest and nothing was seeming to get any better. Committing myself to brain training exercises everyday, changing my diet and also meditation was a huge help decreasing all the anxiety i had just waiting for my symptoms to trigger throughout the normal day.
I feel like there has to be more concussion awareness and education programs so people like myself are more aware...”

When dealing with post-concussion management in children, the possibility of long-term impairment should never be overlooked. Management which focuses solely on acute neurological problems without adequate steps in place for follow-up and continued treatment can result in worsened symptoms later on in the recovery period.

If your child has undergone a concussion, it's important to understand what full recovery consists of. No two concussions are exactly alike and your doctor will advise you on introducing physical and cognitive activities as well as full instructions for follow-up to avoid worsening of symptoms.

As concussion specialists we deal with a lot of post-injury topics, but it's important to also focus on proactive measures you can take to improve your brain health, whether you've previously had a concussion or not!

With a long weekend coming up, we thought we'd talk about one method of improving your brain health and function, which is exercise. Among many other benefits, increasing your heart rate through exercise pumps more oxygen to your brain and aids the release of hormones, which helps promote brain cell growth. Not to mention, it's a mood booster! Even just a brisk walk is much better than nothing.

We'd love it if you shared what you like to do for exercise to help inspire people to do the same!

A recent study published in the Journal of Child Neurology found that trouble falling asleep after sustaining a concussion is associated with a higher symptom burden among children and adolescents. Patients who had trouble falling asleep post-concussion experienced more severe symptoms than those who were able to sleep normally.

If your child has undergone a concussion, it's important to watch their sleep pattern and if they are having any difficulty, make sure you see a concussion specialist who can advise therapeutic measures.

It is our belief that the best way to prevent concussions in children playing contact sports is through education and increased awareness of risks, not by avoiding sports or physical activities.

A recent study done by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia found that one in six children ages 5-15 who get a concussion will have another within two years. The risk for future concussions increases significantly once an initial concussion has been sustained.

Being educated and aware about this increased risk can help families ensure adequate prevention methods are in place for future concussions. These methods may include physical therapy, regular monitoring and testing, as well as symptom management. This does not mean sports or physical activities need to be lessened, it just means higher awareness is required.

Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns or if you'd like to become more educated on any aspects of concussions.
