Dr. Joseph O' Connell

Dr. Joseph O' Connell Dr. Joseph O'Connell is a highly respected aesthetic plastic surgeon practicing in Connecticut.

Unlike some plastic surgery practices that essentially offer only plastic surgery, at The Aesthetic Center of Connecticut, our first approach is almost always non-surgical. Today's technology allows non-invasive approaches to most aesthetic problems and this is accompanied in most instances by shorter recoveries, less need for anesthesia, less risk and lower cost. Examples would be our preference

for CoolSculpting non-invasive fat removal over liposuction, use of BOTOX, fillers and non invasive skin tightening, as well as our use of lasers and radio frequency technology. This requires a sizable ongoing investment in the latest technology - and we've done that. What makes us unique is that when it's time for the surgical approach, we offer the skill and experience of a board certified plastic surgeon with over 35 years of surgical experience. We are pleased to offer CoolSculpting as well as ultrasonic liposuction for body contouring along with Dr. O'Connell's BAND technique for drainless abdominoplasty, also known as, no-drain abdominoplasty. Dr. O'Connell is an expert on breast surgery and he has a vast experience with breast augmentation, breast reduction and breast lifting, also known as mastopexy. The Aesthetic Center offers a nationally accredited, on premises, outpatient surgical facility where such procedures as a facelift, browlift and eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty can be performed. Dr. O'Connell was one of the originators of the no-touch blepharoplasty technique. We're pleased to be able to perform a newer body contouring procedure, labiaplasty, in our facility under local anesthesia at a cost that is substantially lower than when the procedure is performed at a hospital. We offer laser resurfacing with full field erbium resurfacing and ProFractional from Sciton as well as Fraxel Dual, intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) and laser hair removal. We have a PicoWay picosecond laser that offers the latest in tattoo and brown spot removal and also provides facial rejuvenation with their Resolve technology. We've recently made a significant investment in the latest radio frequency based technology including ThermiVa for vaginal tightening and labial contouring, ThermiSmooth for facial wrinkle treatment, IntraCel for non-invasive facial tightening and IntraGen for tightening of the skin off the face. We do not offer Ultherapy, Sculptsure or Smart Lipo at this time. We offer platelet rich plasma therapy with the Selphyl system for facial rejuvenation and also for hair regeneration. Our patients come from a wide geographic area including Westport, Weston, Greenwich, Fairfield and New Canaan, Connecticut and we have many patients from elsewhere in Fairfield County Connecticut and Westchester County New York. We almost always have the three major neuromodulators, BOTOX cosmetic, Dysport and Xeomin on premises and we stock a wide variety of fillers including Restylane, Juvederm, Juvederm Voluma, Juvederm Volbella, Restylane Silk, Restylane Defyne, Restylane Refyne as well as Sculptra Aesthetic and Radiesse.

It’s always great to catch up with old friends- especially when they are some of the most well known and best plastic surgeons in the world! Here we have three generations of training in one photo - on the left is Lee L. Q. Pu, M.D., PhD who was my resident in the Yale system 25 years ago. Dr Pu is now a Professor at U.C. Davis and an incredibly prolific author and authority in our field. On the right is recent ASPS President Malcolm Roth, M.D. I was Dr. Roth’s resident at Cornell 36 years ago.

There are often misconceptions about breast implants especially in the long-term. While Dr. O’Connell prefers saline based implants, especially the new Generation Two implants from Ideal, on occasion he still uses silicone gel implants. These implants were removed after several years based upon the patient’s request and you can see that they are completely intact and they look just like the day they were implanted. We can often remove or change implants in our office without need for sedation or general anesthesia. .implant.illness

It’s always great to receive such a cute card from a grateful patient - in this case it was a child with a facial laceration whose parents had the foresight to seek plastic surgical care in order to minimize the scarring. Dr. O’Connell is well known in Fairfield County as the “go to” doctor for minor injuries for the past 3 decades. He commonly opens the office after hours for lacerations (cuts) of the face, hand and body for both children and adults. He has a special technique to numb up the injured area with minimal discomfort and our patients find the office a more pleasant experience than the hospital. Plus you get the skill and judgment of a double board certified plastic surgeon with over 30 years experience. To reach Dr. O’Connell call 203 454-0044. (FOR TRUE EMERGENCIES CALL 911). .healthcare

In a recent blind comparison test 75 percent of plastic surgeons said the new Gen2 IDEAL IMPLANT felt about the same as silicone and 94 percent said that their patients would agree. The nationwide launch will be in July but at Total Aesthetics we have them now. Women who want to avoid the issue of silent rupture of gel implants and the need for MRI or ultrasound scans can now get the safety of saline with the feel of silicone gel with IDEALS. Dr. O’Connell has been a fan of IDEAL IMPLANTS for years and so have our many satisfied patients

I never take fat out of the upper face with one exception and that’s the inner aspect of the upper eyelid. Fat in this area can leave an unsightly bulge following surgery so it’s usually addressed in my practice. In this video which was taken this week in my office OR, you can see the fat and how it can be removed during upper eyelid surgery and how general anesthesia or sedation is not necessary. Look for surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and don’t be confused by similar sounding names.

I know- you were all hoping for some plastic surgery videos this week but I couldn’t resist showing how I’m training my little brother to be a good watchdog. He wags his tail too much but we’re working on that.

These past 30 years have certainly gone by quickly. When it comes to plastic surgery and choosing a plastic surgeon, training and experience matter. Look for surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery who are also members of ASPS and if you are considering an aesthetic procedure look for a member of the prestigious Aesthetic Society which is only open to board certified plastic surgeons (check www.surgery.org).

It’s like playing the violin. In Mode’s FaceTite provides nonsurgical contouring for those who aren’t ready for surgery and it’s best for firming up a loose neck, treatment of jowls and refining the jawline. As you can see there’s no need for general anesthesia or sedation and our patients are very comfortable. Maybe I’m a little old fashioned but I personally perform FaceTite in my accredited office-based OR under meticulously sterile conditions. I think this should be done by surgeons with expertise in face and neck - I recommend surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. You’re only got one face so do your homework!

I know…I’m already extra handsome and my profile is almost perfect but if my jowls get any bigger I am going to head over to Total Aesthetics and ask Dr. O’Connell about FaceTite. FaceTite is a great way to reduce jowling and neck laxity and it’s an office procedure performed with local anesthesia. There really isn’t any real cutting or sewing involved and I could be back at my watchdog job in less than a week. It’s great for people who want to avoid a nip or tuck and for those like me who look great but want some freshening in the jowls and neck.

Probably the best way to reduce those unsightly cords or bands in the front of the neck is with a neurotoxin like Botox. What’s amazing is that they maintain correction for longer than one would except. The new paradigm is for the skin to follow the muscle and not vice versa

Correcting inverted ni***es is an office procedure that Dr. O’Connell performs under just local anesthesia. While Instagram won’t let us show the initial “stent” like dressing hopefully we can show you this innovative bandage that protects the ni***es afterward. Remember that inverted ni***es can be a sign of serious conditions so make sure that this has been ruled out prior to proceeding with correction. ***esurgery ***esurgery ***esurgery

Ever wondered how plastic surgeons pin the ears back? The operation is called otoplasty and it has many variations but the procedure is most commonly known for correcting protruding ears. Dr. O’Connell has even demonstrated this procedure on the television show Inside Edition. While it’s best known for correcting ear protrusion in children, otoplasty can be done with just local anesthesia in some teenagers and adults as you can see in this video filmed in Dr. O’Connell’s private nationally accredited operating room.

Are you ready for an “eye opening” experience - if you are then UPNEEQ may be for you. One drop in each eye will give you a more awake and alert appearance in as little as five minutes plus your eyes will look whiter and refreshed. We think this product will be popular for that night out, special event or important business meeting.

Everyone wants to know what’s Dr. O’Connell’s secret for his signature eyelid lift with nearly invisible scarring. This procedure is known as “blepharoplasty” and it’s performed in almost all cases in our nationally accredited office-based facility without need for sedation or general anesthesia. As you can see, this patient is awake and completely comfortable and there are no tubes in her nose or throat. In addition to Dr. O’Connell’s “negative space”technique where what is left behind is prioritized over what is removed, the secret is the special weave type closure that is demonstrated in this video. This technique avoids the unsightly “railroad tracking” that can occur with other techniques and makes suture removal a breeze. We call this the Cornell technique because plastic surgeons who trained in the prestigious Cornell training program were taught how to do this. You’ve only got one face so choose your plastic surgeon carefully and make sure he or she is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Dr. O’Connell personally performs all filler and Botox injections in our practice and his patients come far and wide for his expertise and experience. As a double board certified plastic surgeon and master injector he can offer techniques that others may not even know about. Here Dr. O is filling a temporal hollow with one of the RHA fillers from Revance using the “one-up-one-over” technique where the hollow is treated with just a single injection point. This is a great way to restore facial harmony but do your homework first and choose your injector wisely. When it comes to aesthetic injections like Botox and fillers always remember the “3-W’s” - Who is doing the injections and what is their training? (Non-physicians…No thanks!). What product is being used? (If it’s not FDA approved or illegally reimported…No thanks!!). Where is the service being performed? (hair salons, private homes, etc…No thanks)

My approach to plastic surgery:

My method has always been to carefully evaluate and employ recent developments in aesthetic surgery and combine them with time-proven techniques to optimize my patients’ results. I strive to minimize the recovery period, as I understand how difficult it is for our patients to miss more than one week from their professional and social schedules. I believe that aesthetic surgery should be subtle and I strive for a natural, rested, non-surgical look. My preference is to employ techniques that are less complex, less invasive and more predictable.
