Chiropractic care makes a powerful impact on children. The spine has a vital relationship to all functions of the body. If we can ensure the health and strength of the spine while growing, we can support the well-being of future generations. A spinal adjustment done on a child uses the amount of pressure that one would use to grip a tomato. The doctors in our office are leaders in the field of chiropractic care for children and have specific post graduate certifications qualifying them to administer care to children of all ages.

Our goal at Westwood Family Chiropractic is to support the well-being of future generations. From the birth process onward, our spines and nervous systems are subjected to a multitude of forces which can cause misalignments in the spine, called subluxations. Subluxations set the stage for reduced well-being and future health problems. Specific and gentle spinal adjustments allow a child’s spine and nerve system to grow and develop to its optimal potential.

Safe and Secure: The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association has numerous studies indicating that there is very little risk (if any at all) for chiropractic care of infants and children.

Certification: Dr. Katherine and Dr. John are leaders in the field of chiropractic care for children. They have completed numerous hours in specialized pediatric training.

More Information: There are volumes of research available regarding the benefit of chiropractic care for children. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association has a number of these studies available.

No Backpack Injuries Here: 4 Tips on How to Protect your Child's Spine

Off they go starting a new year of school with a backpack half the size of their body! Over half of America’s children are carrying backpacks heavier than the recommended national guidelines which can lead to injuries that have the potential to be lifelong. All that excess weight on a growing spine can lead to subluxations, body pains, weakness in the spine, and postural distortions. Here are some helpful tips to make sure your little scholars are wearing their backpacks safely.

1) Purchase the right backpack: Make sure this year’s backpack has thickly padded, wide straps and lumbar support. The straps allow for the distribution of weight over the whole shoulder, not just on the shoulder joint. The lumbar support redistributes the weight to the lower limbs which supports good posture.

2) Keep it light: Carry only what is needed. Children and teens should only be carrying 10-15% of their body weight. For example, if your child is 80 lbs they should be carrying no more than 12 lbs.

3) Pack it correctly: Heaviest things should be placed at the bottom and against the back of the pack. This keeps the weight off their shoulders and allows for better posture.

4) Wear it properly: Don’t sling it over one shoulder, please! Face the pack before picking it up and use both hands. Make sure the pack is properly situated on both shoulders and the straps are tightened enough to keep the pack close to the back.

And of course come and visit your favorite chiropractor; we’ve always got your back! Here’s to a happy and healthy school year!
