In addition to our Weekly Respite Program on Wednesdays, that provides care and fun for the patient and time for the caregiver to take a break, we also offer a support group that meets the last hour of the Wednesday program.

The Caregiver Support group is free and is a place to find more information on Alzheimer's prevention, treatment and nutrition, or to search for a great gift for your loved one with AD. It provides a loving, supportive environment for sharing of ideas, struggles and fears.

Did you know that The Gathering Place Community Respite not only offers a day program which provides loving care for those who attend and respite or down time for the caregiver, but we also offer a support group for the caregivers.

Support groups allow the caregiver to share ideas and thoughts with others that are caring for a loved one. The support group offers current information on memory loss and the most recent information on treatment and helpful tips for the caregiver. The group offers a place to share the unique emotions and daily struggles of caring for a loved one with memory loss.

Did you know that respite care improves outcomes?
Respite care improves outcomes. Caregiving can take a toll on caregivers, both physically and mentally. At The Gathering Place, we understand how important it is that caregivers receive support to maintain their own wellbeing, so our trained volunteers work with your loved one so the caregiver is allowed to take breaks for rest and recuperation.

The Gathering Place offers the caregiver a program that provides temporary relief to the primary caregiver, known as respite care services. Our program also provides a fun day with a loving staff and a wonderful, homecooked meal for those attending.

Studies show that, despite having more complex health situations, care recipients in families who use respite care services remain in the community an average of 3x longer than those who don’t (900 days compared to 300 days).

Respite care is a win-win situation. It makes for a healthier caregiver and a healthier care recipient.

The Multiple Benefits of Respite Care

Personal support and maintaining your own health are essential to managing your responsibilities as a caregiver. Utilizing respite care before you become exhausted, isolated or overwhelmed can be invaluable to everyone concerned. Experts say that simply anticipating regularly scheduled relief can be an emotional lifesaver.
In addition to needed “downtime” for relaxation, respite care gives you a chance for personal revitalization by spending time with friends and family, shopping, exercising and doing the things that provide you with personal pleasure and fulfillment in your life. Respite care also offers the comfort and peace of mind of knowing that your loved one is spending time with other caring individuals in a safe, comfortable place.

The article, “Respite Care for the Elderly Is Important for Family Caregivers,” enumerates the valuable benefits respite care provides.

These include:
Renewal and Relaxation – Taking a walk, strolling leisurely through the mall, visiting a museum or doing whatever brings joy can calm you, decrease your heart rate and improve your mood.

Energy – To be effective in your busy life, you must take time to re-energize. Even an automobile won’t run on empty.

Space – Getting away from the caregiving situation for even just a few hours can help you relax and bring a renewed sense of purpose.

Pleasure – As a caregiver, you must remember that you have the right to enjoy life. You have no reason to feel guilty.

Identity – You must be purposeful in maintaining your sense of self. You are important, too!

Perspective – Time away from caregiving allows you to see more clearly and keep things in proper perspective. You might even think of better ways of doing things and other resources you can tap into.

Engagement – Social isolation can be a huge problem for caregivers. It’s important to take time to engage with your friends and family by sharing lunch, taking a shopping trip or doing whatever gives you personal enjoyment.

You Deserve a Break!

Unless you are Wonder Woman or Superman, it is important to remember that you can’t do it all. Be realistic — for your sake and your loved one’s. Seeking help is the responsible thing to do. Respite care can provide you with a feeling of revitalization and refreshment that can keep you whole – physically and mentally – and enable you to better spouse, parent, caregiver and person.

Caregivers can stay with their loved one as long and as many times as they want. It is a place to enjoy a fun outing together or a place where your loved one can have a place to go while you enjoy a few hours to yourself.

Very Interesting. We play a game at respite that is akin to Name that Tune and our friends love it. The sound of familiar songs always brings a smile and frequently brings singing and dancing too!

The part of your brain responsible for ASMR catalogs music, and appears to be a stronghold against Alzheimer's and dementia.

Do you know someone living with memory loss that would enjoy a weekly outing to socialize, sing songs, share memories, play games, partake in light stretching and exercise, eat a home cooked meal, laugh and be a part of a loving community? A place that identifies their abilities and centers the program around their strengths?

Do you know a caregiver that could use 4 hours weekly to rest, read, run errands, attend their Doctor's appointments, shop, etc while knowing that their loved on is being lovingly cared for by trained volunteers, is having a great time, is eating a nutritious and fabulous meal while socializing with their friends?

If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, The Gathering Place Community Respite might be the place you or your loved one have been needing. The Respite Program meets from 10-2, every Wednesday. There is an application process. If interested call Tonia at (334) 235-4151. We look forward to hearing from you.

BIG NEWS! We had our first volunteer training yesterday with Daphne Johnston, from First United Methodist Respite Ministry in Montgomery. It was fabulous.

We are ready to open our doors on OCTOBER 10!! The program will meet from 10-2 each Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Wetumpka.

If you would like to know more about Dementia and related conditions, I have posted a link to a You Tube video by Teepa Snow titled Brain Changes. That video is very informative.

At The Gathering Place, we will spend time with your loved one and have some fun. We will create a loving community that will participate in outreach projects, eat lunch, sing, play games, socialize and love each other. We will identify your loved one's strengths and abilities and do activities that use those qualities.

Join us in the fun. We hope to provide respite for the caregiver and for the one with dementia.
