Why LifePulse
When I was 10 years old I was in a mall in Southern Wisconsin with my parents and sisters. We were walking along when a sales woman came running out of a men’s suit store, panicked and yelling “does anyone know CPR, this man is having a heart attack”. Nobody did. This was in 1990 when there weren’t AEDs in the malls and nobody had cell phones. Someone called 911. Mall security came to the scene. Paramedics arrived. I do not know if the man lived or died but I do know that his chances of survival would have greatly increased if someone had known CPR.
I have been CPR certified since I was a teenager. I did a lot of babysitting and our local hospital had certification classes. I knew from a young age that this skill was important and empowering.
As a doctor I have always kept my certification up to date but didn’t think much about it beyond that. And then I became a mom. Before leaving the hospital I had to watch two videos (shaken baby and SIDS) and attend a class where we got information about eating and bathing and swaddling. I left the hospital with that precious brand new life and thought wow, this is amazing and terrifying.
Parents have a lot of fears but choking and having them stop breathing are at the top top of the list for most. I know they are for me (and drowning so he has been in swim lessons since age 1). In my full time job I work with a lot of families and I have had many people ask about where they can take a CPR/First Aid/AED class and there were not very many in my area. So I decided to get certified to be able to provide this service. I want families in my community to feel empowered and confident if they, heaven forbid, encounter an emergency in there home or somewhere out in the world.
