We were so pleased to welcome back the Y Knot Square Dance Club for another lively square dancing lesson!

Our talented caller, Barbara McDonald, along with dancers from her club, gave a wonderful performance and guided residents through the steps. Some of us jumped right in to learn, while others enjoyed watching the fun unfold—but everyone had a great time together.

It was an afternoon full of music, movement, and new friendships as we kicked up our heels and tapped along to the beat. We can’t wait to do it again!

Creativity was in full bloom at Ashton Commons this week!

Our residents enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon designing their very own canvas tote bags using fabric markers and paint. From vibrant florals to festive patterns, each bag was a true work of art—and a reflection of our residents’ wonderful personalities.

One sweet moment came when a resident invited our Executive Director, Diane, to join in the fun. Diane couldn’t resist and created a bag to gift to a resident who needed one—spreading kindness through creativity.

Healthy aging is in full swing at Ashton Commons, thanks in part to our friends at Powerback Rehab. This week, Troy, from Powerback, facilitated an informative presentation on how to prevent falls, including a demonstration on the proper way to bend to pick things up.

Another member of the Powerback team, Kayla, attended our Parkinson Support Group meeting this afternoon to to discuss physical exercise and how to obtain physical therapy if needed.

We are fortunate to have Powerback Rehab on site to provide educational trainings, as well as to assist our residents who are in need of their services each day.

Today, we were delighted to welcome Devin, the Australian Shepherd therapy dog.

Devin belongs to one of our Independent Living residents, Ruth, who kindly offered to facilitate visits with Devin to the community's Personal Care section each month. Today marked the first visit, and we were so impressed by both Ruth’s talent to train dogs and Devin's ability to learn.

Devin has earned accolades including Canine Good Citizenship Certificate and Companion Dog Excellence, among others. He has even been invited to the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show!

Devin charmed us this afternoon with so many tricks - he danced, prayed, rang bells, got Ruth a Kleenex, did push ups, and more! We look forward to the next visit in October. 🐾

What a fun and busy day at Ashton Commons! After hearing residents discuss how they'll miss corn on the cob when the season ends, we kicked off our first annual Corn on the Cob Social, embracing summer's goodness before autumn sets in. 🍂 After husking dozens of ears yesterday morning, our culinary team cooked up sweet corn from Soergel Orchards for everyone to enjoy! 🌽 Did you know corn cobs always have an even number of rows? And that the tallest corn stalk ever was over 35 feet tall? 🤯 What a blast learning fun facts about this amazing crop while sharing delicious food and great company!

At Ashton Commons, we were treated to a sweet surprise from Suncrest Hospice - Pittsburgh, PA—a Bruster's Real Ice Cream Cart right on our patio! Residents, staff, and visitors enjoyed a beautiful sunny afternoon together while choosing from four delicious flavors. 🍦☀️

And it wasn’t just the humans who got a treat—our furry friend Lu Lu was spoiled with her very own pup cup! 🐾

A big thank you to Caitlyn from Suncrest Hospice for sponsoring this event, and to Mary, our friendly ice cream server, for scooping up so many smiles. What a wonderful day of community, sunshine, and sweet moments!

Last week at Ashton Commons, we rolled out the red carpet for Assisted Living Week! 🎉 Our incredible team indulged in delightful sweet treats 🍰 and enjoyed some heartwarming surprises that made everyone's day brighter! Thank you to our amazing staff for making every moment special!

🚗 This past weekend, our campus was alive with excitement during the Farina Foundation's Frank J. Farina 2025 Memorial Car Cruise, part of the Town of McCandless Community Day! The sun shined down as residents admired a stunning mix of new and vintage cars. American Pie Oldies brought the fifties back to life with their amazing tunes on the front lawn. 🎶 It was a day filled with smiles, nostalgia, and community spirit!

September is Healthy Aging Month, and our residents have been busy caring for our vibrant outdoor raised beds. Today was all about fall clean-up. We've enjoyed so many delicious meals using our homegrown gems, like fresh salsa, fried zucchini, and even a tomato sandwich party! 🍅 Everyone pitches in to nurture the gardens while soaking up the sunshine & forming friendships. 🌼

We had such a wonderful evening at Ashton Commons! Dinner was made even more special with live entertainment from one of our residents’ favorite performers, Gene Testa. 🎶 His music filled the room with energy, smiles, and plenty of toe-tapping.

Some of our residents even decided to get up and dance—proof that great music brings joy and connection.

Today, Ashton Commons hosted our first annual ‘Mater Sandwich Social! 🍅

Our team heard residents discuss how they always enjoyed fresh tomatoes from their home gardens by making tomato sandwiches. So, we surprised them with wonderful fresh tomatoes from a local farm market, along with all of their favorite toppings. One resident said it was the best sandwich she had ever eaten! 😊

Make sure you enjoy a ‘Mater sandwich before the summer season is over!
