Surya Namaskar (aka Sun Salutations) are foundational to the practice of vinyasa yoga. Their union of breath with movement, when practiced mindfully and with intention, aids in balancing the energies in our bodies and cultivating a practice that becomes a true moving meditation.
108 is a significant number in Eastern cultural traditions, from which we have received our practice of yoga. While there are numerous examples of its inclusion in architecture and religious ritual, one of the most popular and recognizable is the strand of a mala (used for counting in meditation), which includes 108 beads. 108 is said to be representative of the wholeness of existence.
To celebrate the longest day of the year and the turning of the seasons, we will become the living, breathing mala as we join our breath & movement to flow through 108 sun salutations together.
Class format:
The 108 will be broken up into 12 sets of nine sun salutations, with rests in between, each its own theme and intention. We will alternate between being led as a group, and independent flow led by your own breath. Set to an uplifting playlist crafted to support the intention of each flow, and ending with a dreamy and well-deserved extended savasana (including essential oil & hands-on adjustments, if desired!), you can expect to walk out the door feeling a natural high, but also ready for an excellent night’s sleep.
The room will be heated more lightly than normal, to about 80 degrees. Completing 108 sun salutations usually takes at least 90 minutes, so we have blocked off a full two hours for this special class. Reserving your spot in advance is recommended.
