Groundhog Day comes from European weather folklore, brought to America by German immigrants who adapted traditions from Candlemas Day and used badgers or bears as prognosticators, eventually switching to the native groundhog in Pennsylvania, with the most famous version centered on Punxsutawney Phil since the 1880s.

Roots in Europe
Candlemas: The tradition links to Candlemas, a Christian holiday on February 2, the midpoint between the winter solstice and spring equinox.

Animal Lore: In German folklore, animals like badgers or bears would predict the weather on Candlemas; if they saw their shadow, more winter was coming.

Arrival in America
German Settlers: German immigrants brought these beliefs to Pennsylvania in the 18th century.

Groundhog Swap: Finding few badgers, they substituted the common groundhog, a hibernating rodent, to forecast spring's arrival.

The Punxsutawney Legend
Official Start: The tradition became formalized in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, with the first recorded Groundhog Day in 1886 and the emergence of the famous Punxsutawney Phil in 1887.

The Prediction: The superstition holds that if Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter; if not, an early spring is expected.
