Does anyone have a good reference that would describe the waves of illness in eastern Massachusetts during Colonial Times? I see certain years where children died, like 1790s for example, and I am thinking small pox. The old town records occasionally say what the person dies from. Is just like to see if I can find the theme where siblings died within months of each other etc. thanks!

Zinc! This is the first I have seen. Taking a walk I noticed how clean and bright these two were, until I knocked on them and it was hollow. Odd but they had the right idea, every other stone around has succumbed to time but not these. Highland Cemetery in Weymouth

What gets me most as the mother of 3, the youngest a toddler, are the number of children’s graves I come across in a single cemetery. The further back in time the more I see of parents losing multiple children within a few short years or even months of each other. Many even at the turn of the twentieth century had records of burial at a cemetery but no marker 🥲

It’s always wonderful to come upon a stone this old that looks like it was carved yesterday.

In colonial times, many children did not survive infancy. Sadly, from my local research, many did not have marked graves. Even more sad are those parents who lost multiple children, sometimes within months of each other 👼🏻👼🏻

Puritan names were supposed to exhort good behavior. Lucky Puritans were named Mary or John. Unlucky ones: Humiliation, Maybe or Mahershalalhasbaz.
