Before engaging in any self-destructive behavior, use the DBT halt skill. Ask yourself if you are hungry, angry, lonely, or tired.

Hunger can lead to mood swings and affect our ability to make decisions and lower impulse control. Eat something nutritious and stay hydrated.

When we are angry or experiencing negative emotions, we may not be able to think rationally. Try using other DBT skills to calm down first.

We all experience loneliness at times in our lives. Reach out to someone with whom you have positive experiences with.

When we are physically and emotionally tired, we are often more likely to engage in more negative thinking patterns. Try getting 7-9 hours of sleep at night and keep a consistent sleep schedule.

Sal, Licensed Therapist.

“Sometimes all we really want and need is someone to listen to us, let us to feel our pain, be heard, and allow us to be human. Cherly Richardson once said, “People start to heal the moment they feel heard.” I believe that creating a safe space to be your true self without judgment is essential to healing and growing.”

To reduce stigma around mental health, you can:
Use respectful language: Avoid words like “disturbed” “crazy” or “insane” and instead use “people with a mental illness”.
Talk openly about mental health: Share your own experiences or encourage others to share theirs.
Educate yourself and others: Respond to negative comments with facts and experiences.
