We also look at the metaphysical things... and work on bringing them into a scientific or "real-world" basis and application. This is a collaborative group which means it belongs to YOU, the members. Happy World Health Day! 🌍💚 Today is a global reminder that health care should be accessible, culturally relevant, and truly holistic.

Right here in Minnesota, Statute 146A makes that possible. It protects over 35 different styles of massage and bodywork — Thai, Lomi Lomi, Ayurvedic, Mayan Abdominal, and so many other lineage-based and traditional practices. It allows practitioners to honor their authentic training and gives clients the freedom to choose care that truly fits their culture and needs.

SF1131/1717 threatens exactly that beautiful diversity. It would replace 146A’s inclusivity with expensive Western-only training requirements and an English/Spanish-only exam that shuts out many Hmong, Vietnamese, and other minority practitioners.

The Judiciary & Public Safety Committee hears this bill this Wednesday, April 8 — and they are denying public testimony.

That means our emails and phone calls are the only voice left.

TCEHW friends — this one hits close to home. SF 1131/1717 wants to replace our Client Bill of Rights with a generic state registration. The Client Bill of Rights is one of the best protections we have — and this bill removes it. That means clients lose the right to know exactly what training their practitioner actually has.

It also threatens every lineage-based style we’ve fought to protect — Thai, Lomi Lomi, Ayurvedic, Mayan Abdominal, and so many more.

The Judiciary Committee hears it April 8 (tomorrow!) and they’re not allowing public testimony. So our voices have to come through loud and clear in their inboxes and on their phones.

A lot of people are being told that Minnesota “needs” this new registration bill because 146A supposedly doesn’t have enough enforcement. That’s simply not true. Here’s the actual enforcement history under Minnesota Statute 146A 👇:

• Zero medical harm claims reported by insurers in over 25 years
• Only 28 total disciplinary actions against massage therapists in that entire time (for an estimated 5,000–8,000 practitioners)
• The Department of Health already has full power to investigate complaints, issue cease-and-desist orders, and impose fines
• Any criminal behavior is already covered under Title 609 (Minnesota’s criminal code)

Compare that to states with full massage licensure:
Many still have ongoing issues with misconduct and trafficking — because a license does not stop bad actors. 146A already has real teeth and has proven extremely effective at protecting the public while keeping our field inclusive and culturally diverse.

One of the main arguments for SF1131/1717 is “we need this for public safety.” Here are the actual facts under our current law (146A) 👇:
• Insurers have been required to report any medical harm claims from massage or complementary practices since 2001.
• In 25+ years — there have been ZERO medical harm claims reported to the state.
• There have only been 28 misconduct cases total — and those are already handled under criminal law (Title 609).

So why are we creating an expensive new registration system with Western-only training requirements and barriers that hurt low-wage and minority practitioners?

Rent-seeking is when a group or industry uses government power (like new licensing or registration laws) to create barriers that protect their own profits and limit competition — instead of competing by offering better services or lower prices.

In plain English: It’s not about protecting the public. It’s about using the law to keep others out so the insiders can charge more and face less competition.

One of the best protections we have under 146A is the . It requires every practitioner, including massage practitioners, to clearly tell clients exactly what training and education they have — real transparency.

SF 1131/1717 would take that away and replace it with a generic state registration. Clients would lose the ability to know what kind of training their practitioner actually received.

With over 35 different styles of massage and many practitioners also offering Reiki, energy work, aromatherapy, and other 146A modalities, this hurts the public’s right to know.

The Judiciary Committee hears the bill this Wednesday, April 8 — and they’re not allowing public testimony.

‘Voluntary’ registration sounds harmless… but it’s the first step to full licensure that will erase , , , , and other lineage-based styles without first having unrelated Westernized training.
