From 2016 to today. What a journey.

The first photo takes us back to our very first IBJJF competition after Joao arrived in Minnesota. At the time, we were just beginning to understand what was possible for our jiu jitsu community here. The second photo shows GFTeam Minnesota standing on top of the podium, bringing home the team trophy last weekend.

Between those two moments is years of dedication, belief, and leadership from one person who helped shape so much of what we see today. Joao didn’t just teach techniques—he helped build a culture. He brought world-class jiu jitsu to Minnesota, created GFTeam Minnesota, and inspired an entire community to grow together on and off the mats.

So many of us wouldn’t be where we are in our jiu jitsu journey without his guidance, patience, and belief in what this team could become.

This win is special, but the impact he’s had on our community is even bigger than any trophy.

Thank you, Professor, for everything you’ve done—and continue to do—for Minnesota Jiu Jitsu and the GFTeam family. Higher Ground wouldn't be here today without you!
