It’s a lab day here in the office and we have some Gestational Diabetes screenings!

The Fresh Test has become a popular option to screen for GDM, you get the same screening as you would with Glucola, and you get to avoid the viscus drink that a lot of clients have a hard time with.

The Fresh Test is actually a FDA backed and approved alternative to the Glucola for GDM screening, which is exciting as it’s a way to offer the standardized screening in an individualized way.

Another benefit of Midwifery care, you get personalized care for you.

I also offer several other alternatives to testing/screening for Gestational Diabetes including, but not limited to:

A breakfast test
2 weeks of testing; Fasting and postprandial
Smoothie test
Glucola
Fresh Test
2 hour GTT screening
And more…

*Note, some of the above tests are not “approved” forms of testing, but I offer a wide range for an individualized care program and we go over the risks, benefits and alternatives for testing (and not testing) during you care.

So, we have been going through some hard times over here and recently got some news that is at a really terrible time. As most of you know, Our youngest was born with a heart condition and we have been monitoring it his whole life with the expectation that he would get through puberty and we would have more time before he needed this surgery. Unfortunately, we got surprised with the news at his last visit that this will not be happening and he will be having surgery in the first quarter of next year (as long as he remains asymptomatic). We are already getting bills that insurance is not covering his cardiac stuff (and what it’s covering is at the out of network pricing been though we already have been approved for this services/doctor/clinic since we moved here).

I also was recently diagnosed with a heart condition so that has been fun to navigate as well. More of the story in the link about what’s happening and why we decided to crowdfund.

Thank you for everyone’s support in this so far. Thank to to everyone that has sat and let me vent about the health care system and my feeling guilty and like I don’t personally deserve to crowdfund because I have it better than other folks (even though this very well could financially devastate us). So thank you in advance for your support financially, emotionally, physically and with sharing our story. This season in our life has been stressful and humbling (and a bit isolating). It’s hard to ask for help when almost everyone you know is really going through it also.

You may just be a midwife when you go straight from client appts to dinner and have to stash their labs in your purse so they don’t overheat in the car 😂. Nothing like being the weirdo with someone else’s blood in your bag at a restaurant.

Fact Friday: Home Birth Edition

Did you know?
Studies show that home birth can be just as safe as hospital birth for low-risk pregnancies and in some cases, it may even offer better outcomes in terms of maternal satisfaction and reduced medical interventions. According to published research, planned home births with trained midwives have comparable outcomes to hospital births for low-risk birthing parents, with fewer interventions like epidurals, C-sections, and episiotomies.

Why is this important?
Home birth allows families to experience a more personal, calm, and empowering birth experience. With the continuous support of a skilled midwife, many parents feel more in control, which can enhance emotional and physical recovery. It also gives families the comfort of being in their own space, surrounded by familiar surroundings and loved ones.

Fun Fact:
Many countries, such as the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the UK, have long-standing traditions of home birth, with midwives being the primary caregivers for families choosing this path. In fact, in the Netherlands, ~30% of births take place at home, and the country has one of the lowest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world. In the Us, it less than 2% and we have one of the highest maternal and infant mortality and morbidity rates (something to think about).

If you’re considering home birth, know that you’re not alone, this ancient practice is experiencing a resurgence as more families seek personalized care, fewer interventions, and a deeper connection to the birth process.

Happy Fact Friday!

This is what healthcare in America looks like. I have both my laptop AND my desktop open. I just spent HOURS trying to get a hold of a person to help me. And then we just “deleted” and started over as the solution… What ppl don’t see (especially for a small business that provides health care) is the sheer amount of time I spend NOT being a Midwife. I have been working with other Midwives to get MA coverage for home birth for almost 2 years (shout out to Midwives for pushing for this because someone finally actually listened). It finally went into effect in January of this year, it’s now JUNE and I am still not able to provide care to folks on MA. Today will be my 2nd portal submission and I also did a paper submission and NOTHING. I am a MA provider in WI and it was no where near this hard. Why it’s being over complicated I’ll never know.

AND, after I get approved for MN Care/MHCP… THEN I get to beg individual MCOs to “allow” me to submit to them for reimbursement. So far, some seem okay with it but others are not on board and since they only have to contract with a certain percentage of provider types in the area, they have the right to deny giving me a contract, which leaves those folks that qualify for a PMAP plan to not actually have the access we fought for, leaving further inequities in care. Which, is ironic, because the whole point of this was to make access to care more equitable… So, here I am, again, sitting in from of 2 computers and a cell phone, begging for the approval of my contract so I can care of folks on MA.

Thanks for coming along for the rant/ crash out. I literally just want to be able to provide care. Also, session was extended so we don’t even know yet if our codes are getting expanded to ensure we get a better payment for care, because it’s currently like 1300 if someone doesn’t transfer, and no newborn coverage. Yay… healthcare in the US. It’s a dumpster fire and progressing to a building fire, a city block fire… etc.

You might be a midwife if you needed a mouse pad (my Apple mouse died 😂) and you have some extra PAP mats laying around. 😂 one thing midwives are good at is improvising. Highly recommend, 10/10 mouse pad.

I’ve had a really long, hard last couple of weeks and my cup has been getting filled so full, even amongst some of the not so happy aspects of this work that have been happening lately. I’ve received so many kind words this week, I just got an email letting me know that someone is sending me an electrolyte package of appreciation (thank you who ever you are that note that was attached made me cry and it’s one of my favorite products) and these absolutely BEAUTIFUL flowers that are now gracing my dinning room table from a client that has a beautiful homestead and a flower CSA. This work is so personal and wonderful and hard all at the same time. As a Midwife, I walk with families during their highest highs and some of their lowest lows as well as hard decisions and sometimes some big disappointments. Thank you for all of your kind works and gestures, I feel truly appreciated and I was really needing some pick me ups after these last couple of weeks. Y’all are the best!

Happy International Day of the Midwife! I want to thank all of the families that have invited me into their lives and homes to be their family’s Midwife. It’s truly a blessing to be able to do this work and walk along side families as they grow and welcome their new lives.

I truly hope one day we live in a world that respects Midwifery care as the Gold standard.

Birth Story!!

The first story in our birth stories by clients series is a fun one! Birth is always unpredictable! Even having caught and witnessed as many babies as I have, I think I will never fully understand the mystery that is birth. Most of the time, birth is incredibly straightforward, sometimes there’s an occasional emergency that we manage, but sometimes, birth just stumps us!

This is a story about a 4th timer, that has had out of hospital and home births before, and is a birth worker herself! This baby followed no patterns, had his own plan for his journey, and ended up being an incredibly memorable entrance to the world!

Please join me for a Homebirth, turned accidental car birth, turned back into a home postpartum! This is a fun one!

You might just live in Minnesota when you come downstairs to take a labor call at 0320 and you’re met with this 😬. Fortunately, it was not time yet and I got to miss out on driving in this blizzard! I’m not always so lucky though. One thing that will always be wild about this job is; is rain, shine, blizzard, tornado… Midwives come to you. It’s one of the benefits of homebirth. You let us deal with the elements and you just stay put.
