What Is Independent Living?

Independent living is both a philosophy and a movement that believes people with disabilities should have the same freedom, opportunities, and control over their lives as everyone else.

It doesn’t mean living alone or doing everything by yourself. It means having the right to:

✔ Make your own decisions
✔ Choose where and how you live
✔ Work and pursue education
✔ Participate fully in your community
✔ Direct the services and supports you use

Independent living is rooted in self-determination, peer support, consumer control, and equal access. The focus is on removing societal barriers — not changing the person.

At its core, independent living is about dignity, choice, and full inclusion in community life.
