There comes a time during a child’s AAC journey…

When the words they type or select are solely their own.

Not to request… Not to answer… Not to plan…

Just a thing they wanted to say.

And it’s magical. 🤩

For some children, it comes quickly.

For others, like my son, it can take years.

The picture below shows the first time this happened. It’s a script, and I had no idea what it meant. Luckily his twin knew exactly where it came from and translated for me. 🥰

Then the other night, he came to me and said something that was so important to him, and I didn’t even realize he thought about it.

(It’s not something I will share with you.)

I’m telling you this because I know how frustrating it can be on this journey, for the child and everyone who supports them.

But keep presuming competence. Keep providing access. Keep enjoying each other.

Notice that I didn’t say to keep pushing.

We don’t do that here. 💜

About Us:

Why consider Garden State AAC Specialists? We believe every child, teenager, and adult who are unable to communicate has the basic human right to do so. All individuals communicate, and we consider ourselves communication detectives. We look at how the individual is currently communicating and work from there to develop a more conventional communication approach. We are inspired to work with children and adults who are non-verbal, we have seen their humor, strength, and determination, this pushes us to help them achieve success. Just because one doesn’t have a physical voice doesn’t mean they have nothing to say. We believe in finding the appropriate tools and modalities to assist in communication and language development. Communication development is dynamic and ongoing and needs change throughout one’s life.
