WHITE HOUSE, TN history!!!
White House is a city located in Robertson and Sumner counties in the state of Tennessee. With estimates placing the population at 16,463 in 2024. The city lies approximately 22 miles north of downtown Nashville, making it part of the greater Nashville metropolitan area.
The area now known as White House was first settled around 1828 when Richard Stone Wilks, a Virginia native, purchased land there. A historic trail created by Native Americans passed through the region, later becoming the Louisville & Nashville Turnpike during the mid-1800s. In 1928, the route was renamed U.S. Highway 31W.
During the 19th century, the Carter, Thomas, and Hough Stagecoach Company operated along the Louisville & Nashville Turnpike. One of the regular stops was a white, two-story house built by Wilks in 1829. The house served as a place for travelers to rest, eat, and exchange horses. It is also believed that President Andrew Jackson stayed there while traveling between his home and Washington, D.C. Since white-painted homes were uncommon in the area at the time, stagecoach drivers began referring to the stop as “White House,” a name that eventually became associated with the surrounding community.
The original White House building was demolished in 1951 to allow for new development. In 1986, the community constructed a replica known as the White House Inn Library and Museum. Located in the center of town beside the fire department, the building originally housed the city library, a museum showcasing local artifacts, and the Chamber of Commerce. After a new library was built in 2015, the replica became exclusively a museum and Chamber of Commerce facility.
White House was officially incorporated in 1971. Since then, the city has experienced significant residential and economic growth. Numerous housing developments and apartment communities have been planned or constructed in recent years, including more than 800 proposed homes and several apartment complexes. Due to its proximity to Nashville, White House is expected to continue growing rapidly as a suburban community within the expanding Nashville region. 🌍
