Foot Fact Friday!!!

Feet Grow for Years!

Your feet grow throughout childhood – at times with extraordinary speed. From 0 to 2 they double in size every two months! They slow down slightly at 2 years but keep growing in fits and starts until around 20 years old. Even then your feet don’t stop developing. In your 40s they tend to flatten and elongate so they become longer and wider. Pregnancy also makes your feet grow slightly due to hormonal changes and the extra weight you carry.

Foot Fact of the Day!

Foot pain can lead to trouble getting around, which can cause weight gain, weakness, and worse heart function.

Up to 87 percent of people have painful feet at some time in their lives for many different reasons. One-third of older adults has foot pain, stiffness, or aching feet. Many of these problems come from poorly fitting shoes.

I can treat most foot problems. Podiatrists can diagnose problems and choose the appropriate treatment. Often a change in footwear will do the trick.

Happy Feet: The Importance of Proper Foot Care

Caring for your feet is essential for maintaining their health and preventing discomfort or pain. Simple self-care practices like washing your feet daily, keeping them moisturized, and trimming your nails properly can go a long way in preventing common foot problems. Furthermore, wearing comfortable, well-fitting footwear and giving your feet regular breaks from high-impact activities can significantly contribute to their well-being.

Podiatry Fact of the Day!

Your toenails take one month to grow 1.6 millimeters.

If you lose a toenail, it can take up to 1.5 years before it fully grows due to its slow growth rate. Additionally, as we age, our toenails thicken and round out, which causes the growth rate to slow even more.

Podiatry Fact of the Day!

Feet come in various shapes and sizes, and understanding your arch type is crucial for optimal foot health. There are three main arch types: flat, neutral, and high. Flat arches have minimal or no visible arch, while neutral arches exhibit a moderate arch curve. High arches, on the other hand, have a more pronounced curve. Knowing your arch type can help in selecting appropriate footwear and managing foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis or overpronation.

Podiatry Fact of the Day!

In the past, the big toe was used to help our predecessors climb trees and act as a thumb of sorts. In today’s medicine, the big toe can even be used as a replacement if your thumb is lost.
Even though it is called your big toe, your second toe may be longer than your big toe. This condition is known as Morton’s Toe and affects around 20-30% of the population. If you have this condition, you may be at an increased risk for bunions, hammertoes, and even back problems as this condition may affect how your body distributes weight and pressure on your feet.

Podiatry Fact of the Day!

Our feet are home to an abundance of nerve endings, making them one of the most sensitive areas of our body. These nerve endings provide us with vital information about our surroundings, such as temperature, texture, and pressure. Additionally, the sensory feedback from our feet plays a crucial role in maintaining balance and coordination.

Podiatry Fact of the Day!

THE FEET MIRROR A PERSON’S GENERAL HEALTH!!

If a person’s feet are in bad condition, it is likely that their overall health is also in bad condition. Foot ailments often show signs of unhealthiness before any other part of the body. An unhealthy foot may indicate that a person has a nerve or circulatory disorder.

Podiatry Fact of the Day!

Shopping for shoes is best done in the afternoon. Your feet tend to swell a little during the day, and it’s best to buy shoes to fit them then. Have your feet measured every time you purchase shoes, and do it while you’re standing. When you try on shoes, try them on both feet; many people have one foot larger than the other, and it’s best to fit the larger one.

Podiatry Fact of the Day!

Your feet absorb tens of thousands of pounds during a typical day. On average, your feet absorb a total force of 26,000 pounds. That’s two elephants. Add a 2.5-inch heel to the equation? You increase your load by 75%. In other words, 45,500 pounds. Think twice before spending a significant amount of time in heels - instead properly support your feet throughout the day!

★★★★★ "Dr. Veltre is very knowledgeable about podiatry issues. I went to two other podiatrist who did not explain or fully treat my pain/issue, as Dr. Veltre did. He gave me options and developed a treatment plan. I strongly recommend Dr. Veltre for your foot pain. He is very professional ...
