Mother’s Day is a celebration—but it’s also a reminder that women’s health has too often been underestimated, overlooked, or misunderstood.

Stroke is one of those places where that shows up clearly.

Women face unique stroke risk factors—pregnancy complications, hormonal changes, migraines, autoimmune conditions—and their symptoms are more likely to be missed or dismissed.

That’s why awareness matters.

Because stroke doesn’t always show up the way people expect. And when it’s missed, time is lost.

This is why we need to know B.E. F.A.S.T.:
Balance. Eyes. Face. Arm. Speech. Time.

And act without hesitation.

On Mother’s Day, I’m thinking about the mothers, daughters, caregivers, and women who were told “it’s nothing”—when it wasn’t nothing at all.

We can do better.
We have to do better.

Awareness is not optional. It’s lifesaving. 🧠💛

🧠 Stroke doesn’t always look like what you think it might. It can happen at any age, and there are symptoms beyond the traditional F.A.S.T.

I woke up fine, then suddenly everything was wonky. I saw a flash of light, my arm moved involuntarily, and my leg gave out. I wasn’t processing info normally. I didn’t have slurred speech or a face droop - it was still a stroke. My body felt “way off”.

Here’s what to look for—because recognizing the signs can save a life:
🌀 Sudden confusion
⚡️ Blurred vision
🧠 Sudden, severe headache
🚶 Loss of balance or coordination

B.E. F.A.S.T.
B – Balance trouble, headache, dizziness
E – Eye/ Vision issues
F – Face drooping
A – Arm weakness
S – Speech difficulty
T – Time to call 911

Save this post. It could save a life.

29 days in the hospital.
Acute rehab denied—twice.

I refused to leave when the discharge didn’t feel safe—and I’m grateful I trusted that instinct. I was still in the hospital when my brain bled.
Eventually, 9 days in acute rehab.

This was the beginning.
My recovery started in the ICU—taking steps that felt unsteady and uncertain. What you see here is more than walking… it’s the first glimpse of realistic optimism—finding moments of humor and choosing determination anyway. It’s where healing began to take shape.

It wasn’t just physical. It was emotional. Mental. Spiritual.
Stroke doesn’t just impact your body—it reshapes your life.
I’m still grateful for every person who helped me take those first steps—literally and figuratively.

One of the hardest parts of my stroke story isn’t just what happened—
it’s what didn’t happen.

The care I never received.
The warning signs that were brushed off.
The voices that silenced mine.

I wasn’t just fighting for my life.
I was fighting to be believed.

It took everything I had to say—again and again: “This is real, my arm is moving on its own.”

I’m not sharing this to sit in the pain.
I’m sharing it because it’s still happening.

Too often.
To too many.
Especially to women.

We can’t change what we don’t name.

Stroke doesn’t show up the same for everyone.

Depending on which side of the brain is affected, the symptoms—and the recovery—can look very different.

Left side strokes can impact speech and language.
Right side strokes can impact awareness and perception.

Different experiences. Same reality:
the faster you act, the better the outcome.

🧠💥 May is Stroke Awareness Month 💥🧠
And I’m showing up—with my story, my scars, and my voice.

In 2020, I had a stroke that changed everything.
I was visiting my daughter in Denver when my life took a sharp turn.
29 days in the hospital.
A long road through rehab.
And almost six years later—I’m still here. Still healing. Still learning.

This May, I’m sharing my story to raise awareness, spark conversation, and remind others that stroke doesn’t only happen to “someone else.”

✨ Stroke can happen at any age.
✨ The signs matter.
✨ Recovery is possible—and personal.
✨ Awareness saves lives.

So here’s my commitment: all month long, I’ll be posting about my journey, the things I wish I had known, and the power of showing up—messy, honest, and alive.

If you’ve survived a stroke, love someone who has, or just want to know more—this space is for you. Let’s talk about it.

My advice to you… never miss a Sunday soundbath. Thank you and .yoga what a lovely space you created. Thank you.

It’s Stroke Awareness Month — el mes de la concientización sobre el derrame cerebral.

My focus goes beyond my personal story. This month, I’m centering awareness, education, myth-busting, community-building, and continued advocacy.

Este mes me centro en la educación, el rompimiento de mitos, y la construcción de comunidad.

Stroke doesn’t just happen to “other people”—it can affect any of us. One of the most powerful tools we have is knowledge.

El derrame cerebral no solo le ocurre a “otras personas”—puede afectar a cualquiera de nosotros.

Let’s make this month count—for education, for connection, and for change. 🧠💛
Hagamos que este mes cuente—por la educación, la conexión y el cambio.

May the 4th be with you…
and may you always remember B.E. F.A.S.T.

Balance. Eyes. Face. Arm. Speech. Time.

My very first Stroke Awareness post on May 4, 2022 was “Beyond FAST”—because in addition to the classic symptoms, I wanted to highlight the other sudden signs of stroke:
• Numbness or weakness in the leg
• Confusion or trouble understanding
• Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
• Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
• Severe headache with no known cause

I said it then, and I’ll say it again: it’s important to know that women are often misdiagnosed or their symptoms minimized.

Trust that you know your body better than anyone else.
And if something feels wrong—don’t wait to be certain.

B.E. F.A.S.T. is now part of the American Heart Association’s updated awareness message—expanding how we recognize stroke symptoms.

Every second matters. Knowledge is power.

This Stroke Awareness Month, I’m expanding the conversation. Introducing: En Español - because awareness should be accessible to everyone.

B.E. F.A.S.T. can save a life:
Balance. Eyes. Face. Arm. Speech. Time.

RÁPIDO también salva vidas:
Rostro caido. Alteración del equilibrio. Pérdida de fuerza. Impedimiento de visión. Dificultad para hablar. Obtén ayuda.

Knowing the signs—in any language—matters.
Because stroke doesn’t wait, and neither should we.

Más información. Más acceso. Más comunidad.
This is just the beginning.
