Our facility offers personalized care and exercises to all of our patients like this sit-to-stand exercise.

The sit-to-stand exercise is a functional movement that improves lower-body strength (quads, glutes, hamstrings), core stability, and balance, essential for daily mobility and reducing fall risk.

Performed by rising from a chair without using hands, this exercise is crucial for independent living and rehab.

Improving your balance is not about being extra careful, it is about training your body to stay strong, stable, and responsive. 💪 This month’s newsletter from ProClinix highlights how simple, consistent habits like walking, improving mobility, strengthening your core, and practicing balance-focused exercises can make a real difference in how steady and confident you feel day to day. Checking out some boxing and balance training with Dr. Rachel Terranova (). 🥊

The training provides significant benefits for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease by addressing key motor impairments such as bradykinesia, impaired coordination, reduced postural stability, and delayed reaction time.

Boxing-based exercises promote large-amplitude movements, improve upper and lower extremity strength, enhance cardiovascular endurance, and encourage faster, more forceful movements that counteract the slowed movement patterns seen in Parkinson’s disease. The combination of punching sequences, weight shifting, and footwork also challenges motor planning and coordination. Balance training further supports postural control, proprioception, and reactive balance strategies, helping reduce fall risk and improve functional mobility. Together, these interventions enhance movement confidence, improve gait and stability, and support greater independence in daily activities.

🏋️‍♂️ Sport- and function-specific interventions included:
• Shoulder sphere exercises to improve rotator cuff strength and endurance during ball-passing motions
• Progressive upper-extremity weightbearing to enhance shoulder stability

🔥 Fixing Scapula Winging: Key Exercises You Should Know 🔥

Information and demo brought to you by our LifeTime West Harrison team — Dr. Ben Hylka, PT, DPT and clinical assistant Jill.

“Scapula winging” happens when the shoulder blade sticks out from the back instead of lying flat. This is often caused by weakness in the serratus anterior or rotator cuff muscles, making it harder for the shoulder to stay stable during movement.

Here are three exercises that help strengthen and stabilize the scapula:

🕒 Wall Clock
Using a resistance band, the arm moves around the “clock,” engaging the rotator cuff and scapular muscles to improve control and stability.

⬆️ Serratus Wall Slide
Sliding the arms upward and forward trains the serratus anterior—key for keeping the shoulder blade flush against the rib cage and preventing winging.

💪 Scaption
Using light dumbbells, this movement targets the rotator cuff and reinforces proper shoulder mechanics and scapulohumeral rhythm.

💡 Pro Tip:
Avoid shrugging or “hiking” your shoulders during these exercises. If you feel the work in your neck, your upper traps are compensating. Focus on slow, controlled movement and keeping the shoulders down and relaxed.

Stronger scapula = better posture, better performance, and less pain. 🙌
