Ableism is the idea that disabled people are “less than,” and that “typical” ways of communicating, learning, and being are superior.

Many people grow up with ableist beliefs woven into their lives. Part of being neurodiversity affirming is recognizing our own internalized ableism and how it shapes our perspectives.

Most people would not intentionally say something harmful, dismissive, or rude about autistic individuals, but many common statements are still ableist.

When someone in your life receives an autism diagnosis it's normal to want alllll the information. But teaching you about autism should never be the autistic person's responsibility.

They are not responsible for defining autism for you, advocating in every moment, or making their experience easier for others to understand.

Learning about autism, seeking out autistic voices, and creating more supportive environments is the responsibility of the adults, professionals, and communities around them.

When we take that responsibility seriously, we reduce the pressure on autistic individuals to constantly explain or defend themselves and we create spaces where they can just be.

That’s what true acceptance looks like.
