Services are provided via teletherapy to Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts. In person services are provided in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont as well as the Dartmouth-Sunapee region including Hanover, Lebanon, White River Junction, Sunapee, New London, Springfield, Enfield, Grantham and Croydon.

Balanced Speech Therapy is hiring for MULTIPLE positions in the Upper Valley! We are an anti-burnout practice that prioritizes the well being of our staff. Benefits include health and dental insurance, PTO, CEU and licensure reimbursement and a gym membership to the River Valley Club.

"She's done it before."
"He's said it before."
"I've seen you do it, I'll just wait."

These are common things parents say about their autistic children. It's easy to think that once a child has shown they are capable of a skill, they should be expected to do it every time.

But that's not the case.

Fluctuating capacity is a common feature of autism and means that just because someone is capable, doesn't mean they always have the capacity.

Respecting limitations and supporting your child is not teaching them to rely on others, its teaching them to listen to and trust their own bodies.

Identifying what taxes your child most and providing support around those needs can help them maintain their capacity for what matters most.

The next time your autistic child struggles to do something they've done before, ask yourself "is this capability or capacity?"
