A small adjustment for opening up the shoulders, and neck . . . one that starts with the arms.
If I hold my arms in like I’m a sardine in a can, I feel tense and my arms feel heavy.
If instead, I relax the elbows outwards (to the sides), I feel more relaxed and open.
If you haven’t yet, try it now!
"Arms straight down and held tightly in, vs. relaxed w/ elbows slightly bent and pointed out".
This feeling of lightness has multiple reasons:
1. straightening the arms causes tension in the elbows, compressing the nerves and blood vessels there.
This lack of flow makes things feel heavier, and more tense.
Relaxing the area improves flow, and more blood, nutrition and oxygen gets to the fingers and back up the arm . . .
2. The slight adjustment takes pressure off the lungs, so we breathe easier, too.
3. Tucking the arms tends to pull the spine forward.
When the arms relax out, the spine relaxes back,
opening the entire nervous system,
and making it easier to notice the pelvic bowl and lower body.
This attention to the lower
lends stability
and warmth
to the Whole.

These principles were inherited from from a dedicated study of the body with masters of traditional taijiquan ("Tai chi") , and medical or restorative Qigong ("chi gong"). Although, - we explain their efficacy through recognized medical science.
