This study took 560 patients of 10 different health professions and ran them through an MRI to verify their diagnoses. Of the 10 different professions assessed for the accuracy of their orthopaedic diagnosis, Physical Therapists performed similarly to Orthopaedic Surgeons and well ahead of other primary care providers.
Physical Therapists have the knowledge and training to accurately and safely diagnose your injury. They have the ability to order imaging when it's required [see below] and identify when a condition requires further work-up by a surgeon.

(PREVIEW OF COMING ATTRACTIONS: studies show PTs order xrays and MRIs more consistently within guideline recommendations than other practitioners. Imaging is far over-ordered compared with what the science, guidelines, and experts recommend.)
