Remember that 2/3 of a 5 gallon bucket of valerian roots I dug and painstakingly cleaned yesterday? It took me 3 hours to do all that and now I will be processing and tincturing all those roots today, which will take me another 2+ hours.

This will give you an idea of the time it takes from harvest to product for just ONE HERB!! And this doesn’t even count the growing from seed, planting, mulching before the harvest and the pressing and bottling after the product is made!!

And I will tell you….totally worth it!!!! The smell of these fresh roots is so earthy and wonderful! It reminds me of how HUGE a gift nature is and the privelage it is to use what God has given us for our health and well being!!!

🌱 My tip for the day for those of you who are starting to grow, harvest and use their own herbs…get yourself some good, sharp herb scissors. Pictured are ones I found on Amazon for trimming bonsai trees 😂 They work just the same! The tips are very very sharp (ask me how I know!!) and they can get into tight spaces! I process most of my herbs with this type of scissor unless they’re huge gnarly roots or too large to manage with scissors. Other tools that I use are a Japanese saw and my chefs knife. 🌱

Guessing Game!!

Name this herb….it’s the one I complain about every year because the roots are like a head of hair and trap all the things in it. HARD to get all the mud and mulch out but so so worth it for what it’s beautiful (stinky?) roots do for the human body!! Could not live without this herb ❤️

Three out of four patio garden boxes planted today!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Russian Banana Potatoes (I’m trying something new in these boxes), salad greens (romaine lettuce, spinach and mizuna mustard) and the last box is cilantro and radishes. I don’t even know for sure if cilantro and radishes grow well together but we will certainly find out!!!

The fourth box will be planted in a couple weeks with more salad greens so we have a continuous harvest. I plant my greens boxes at least twice each year. So that’s 4 boxes of greens! 😋

These patio pots have been a game changer for me. They are easy to plant, easy to maintain, easy to water and easy to harvest. And best of all, the bunnies stay out of them for the most part. I have to keep it weedwacked around them or the bunnies think they’re fair game 🙄

I add bone&blood meal and azomite and green sand to these boxes so the veggies grow strong and full of minerals that we need to eat!!! This year I also added some soil from the chicken runs because between the chicken poo and the rotting untreated woodchips, that is nasty good soil!!!!

Show me what you’re planting this time of year!! I want to get bunching onions into one of these containers yet….may have to go into the fourth one!!!

Does anyone local want to drop what they’re doing and come out and harvest some stinging nettle (free) for their own personal use? I have ONE opening and it’s for 11-12 today.

It doesn’t take long to harvest and it’s easy to air dry for tea. Makes a great addition to your dog or chicken food also.

All you need it a pair of gloves, sharp snips and a container/bucket to put your nettles in.

Pls comment if you’re interested. This is the ONLY time slot I have until next harvest.

Today is dandelion day. This soggy ground hinders just about every root harvest but dandelions are less cumbersome because they’re basically one tap root. They don’t hold a ton of mud!

And when you’re running out of dandelion tincture, anytime is a good time! So thrilled it’s spring again!!! 🎉🎉🎉
