It’s been a quiet week in my practice — quieter than I’d like.
After a quick freak-out (therapists are human too), I decided to pause, connect with new colleagues, and refocus on the work that matters most: helping women heal from trauma, rebuild trust with their bodies, and find peace with food again.

Sometimes a slowdown isn’t failure — it’s a reset.
If you or someone you know in New York is looking for trauma-informed therapy, I have openings for both in-person and telehealth clients.

Clients often feel powerless once the shame spiral starts. A helpful reframe is showing them that even tiny nervous system shifts can interrupt the loop.

The goal isn’t to “fix” shame in the moment, but to help clients experience that they can step off the spiral, even briefly. That experience alone starts building new pathways.

If you’d like more ready-to-use practices to give clients, check out the free Mind-Body Healing Toolkit I created — designed for therapists to share with clients navigating trauma and eating disorders.

One of the hardest things for clients with trauma and eating disorders is feeling like they’re “broken” because they keep ending up in the same painful cycles.
➡️ Frame it as a learned nervous system loop, not a personal flaw.
➡️ Use the graphic to visually show the links in the spiral and how it functions to reinforce shame
➡️ Emphasize that the spiral can be interrupted with awareness and skills.
I created the Mind-Body Healing Toolkit — a free, trauma-informed resource you can share with your clients to help them start practicing skills to stop their shame spiral.

Don't underestimate the impact loud conflicts and emotional tension can have on a child's developing brain

A groundbreaking study using brain scans has revealed a disturbing parallel: children exposed to intense family conflict show brain changes similar to those found in combat veterans. That’s right — the emotional warfare inside a home can mimic the neurological toll of literal battlefield trauma.

Researchers found that kids who witness chronic yelling, aggressive arguments, or domestic tension have altered brain activity in areas linked to fear, stress, and emotional regulation. These are the same brain regions often affected in soldiers returning from war zones.

The amygdala, a part of the brain responsible for processing threats and fear, becomes hypersensitive, constantly on alert. Meanwhile, the prefrontal cortex, which helps manage emotions and make rational decisions, often becomes underdeveloped or impaired. This combination can lead to long-term emotional difficulties, anxiety, or even PTSD-like symptoms later in life.

What makes this even more alarming is that many families underestimate the impact of loud fights or emotional tension on children. But the science is clear: a child's brain is shaped by the emotional climate they grow up in.

This discovery highlights the urgent need for family therapy, safe environments, and emotional education to protect developing minds. Just because there are no visible bruises doesn’t mean the damage isn’t real.

Sometimes my clients tell me they don’t want to feel emotions anymore —
because they’re too painful, or they lead to behaviors they regret.

But regulating emotions isn’t always about deep breathing or positive thinking.
It’s not always calm, clean, or Instagram-worthy.

Sometimes regulation means shaking, crying, resting.

Sometimes it means feeling everything and staying with yourself anyway.
It’s learning how to sit with hard emotions — without being at their mercy.
