HEAL Is Proud to Recognize Our 2025 Phoenix Award recipient, Mr. Mark O’Brien.
The Phoenix Award honors an individual who has risen from the depths of addiction to the joys of service, much like the Phoenix rises from the ashes of defeat to soar in beautiful redemption.
HEAL is proud to award the 2025 Phoenix Award to Mark O’Brien. Mark’s journey has led him from the adversity of addiction, to now being employed through the Kentucky River District Health Department and The Letcher County HUB. In his role, Mark assists with the day to day management of the HUB, acting as a helping hand to those in any phase of their recovery journey. Whether it is 6:00am or well after the close of business, Mark is always available to guide and to provide hope to another seeking recovery. Using his lived experience to lead, Mark provides a safe place to land for those seeking recovery, and his presence in Letcher County has undoubtedly changed the lives of many in our community. “As the recipient of this year's Phoenix Award, I just want to state what a true honor it is,” O’Brien stated. “I am truly blessed to be in a community that has so much care for other individuals and their well-being. I started this battle after my life of addiction, to give others out there the hope and drive, so that they can return back and be a wonderful addition to the community and give others that same hope that was lost in addiction. Every person in this world is an individual that has dreams and desires. When we were shut down and rejected by others, it just led us down the road of coping, and self-medicating, and addiction. So, in receiving this award, this is just a shout out to all loved ones lost out there in addiction that there is a way out, and with a community built on understanding, you too can eventually get there.” HEAL is honored to not only have Mark as a HEAL partner and a peer leader in our community, but we are also honored to present him with the 2025 Phoenix Award.
The Community Partner Award and the Phoenix Award will be presented during the HEAL presentation at Recovery Central. The presentation will take place on the Mountain Heritage Stage in Downtown Whitesburg on July 24th at 7:00pm. The presentation is open to the public.
