For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ephesians 6:12

All life is a struggle—that is the nature of things. Even within our physical bodies, doctors tell us, a conflict for supremacy is going on. The bacteria in our bloodstream are waging a constant war against alien germs. The red corpuscles fight the white corpuscles constantly in an effort to maintain life within the body. A battle is also raging in the spiritual realm. “We fight,” the Bible says, “against the rulers of the darkness of this world.” Darkness hates light. I have a dog that would rather dig up a moldy carcass to chew on than to have the finest, cleanest meal. He can’t help it—that is his nature. Men cannot help that it is their nature to respond to the lewd, the salacious, and the vile. They will have difficulty doing otherwise until they are born again. And until they are changed by the power of Christ, they will likely be at enmity against those who are associated with Christ.

ARH NEWS RELEASE: ARH honored with Healthy Communities Award for its Food is Medicine initiative

Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) has been named the 2025 recipient of the Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) Healthy Communities Award, recognizing ARH’s outstanding Food is Medicine initiative and its impact in improving the health and wellness of Appalachian Kentucky.

The Healthy Communities Award celebrates individuals and organizations that are breaking down barriers to health by addressing disparities and promoting wellness. ARH earned this year’s recognition for its innovative Food is Medicine (FiM) programs, which promote optimal health, healing, and the reduction of chronic disease through healthy foods and nutrition education.

Across ARH’s service region, Food is Medicine programs are helping patients and families live healthier lives by:

Providing voucher programs for fresh produce to seniors, children, and patients with diabetes
Hosting cooking classes in partnership with Cooperative Extension Services, often incentivized with grocery or produce gift cards
Enrolling patients into medically tailored meal studies in collaboration with the University of Kentucky’s Food as Health Alliance.
Offering diabetes support groups that include A1C testing, cooking demonstrations, and provider-led education
Providing in-facility food pantry boxes for patients in need in Kentucky River and Big Sandy regions in partnership with God’s Pantry Food Bank
Educating their own providers in the importance of nutrition in managing and preventing chronic disease in partnership with the American College of lifestyle Medicine
Revamping facility cafeterias and menus to incorporate healthier options for staff and patients
Partnering with local farmers markets to host pop-up markets on site at ARH facilities

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16

Christians are to rejoice. To do that, you need only to think of the great things God has done for you. Then we are told not to be anxious, but in our prayers to make our requests known to God. In your biggest problems you have One to whom you can go; and before Him you can pour out your heart with the assurance that He will not leave you without an answer to that great problem. Then we are to fill our minds with those things that are good. They are mentioned in the Scriptures as being things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, of good report, and of virtue. It is upon these things that we are to think. Live positively, not negatively. Once you learn that secret, God will have given you the victory.
