The Appalachian Region of the United states has long been burdened with stark social and economic inequalities. Although rich in natural resources, it is home to some of the poorest counties in the nation. Perhaps the most glaring inequalities in Appalachia are found in the health status of its citizens. Some of the nation’s highest rates of life-limiting chronic disease such as cancer, heart dise

ase, and diabetes are found in Appalachia. For generations, there has been a tendency on the part of outsiders to pathologize Appalachia. Too often, even those with the best of intentions, tend to see the region as nothing other than a complex of problems. What gets left out of the picture are the tremendous assets the region possesses. Started in 2004, Faith Moves Mountains aims to target specific health behaviors through “faith-based” interventions by building relationships with churches within Appalachian communities. In isolated areas, churches are often the backbone of social support and are often the most established and supported institutions. Because they are voluntary and member-supported, here is a strong sense of community ownership. Faith Moves Mountains is an example of a community-based participatory research in which formally trained scientific experts partner with members of a community as full participants in the research process, often with the goal of solving a community problem. Nancy Schoenberg, Ph.D., a Marion Pearsall Professor of Behavioral Science (College of Medicine) and Associate Dean for Research (College of Public Health) at the University of Kentucky, serves as the founder and principal investigator of Faith Moves Mountains. Working as a medical anthropologist, Dr. Schoenberg’s work focuses on health decision-making in under-served populations, with a specific emphasis on the prevention and control of chronic conditions. For more than a decade, Faith Moves Mountains has partnered with community members on numerous research projects. The newest, Community 2 Clinic Navigation Diabetes Research Project launched this Fall.

PSA:
Those who know me know that I am as passionate about our community as I am about the store, and our community spans far beyond Newby.
Last week I had the opportunity to meet a Project Coordinator with Faith Moves Mountains- UK Research Project and we talked about the prevalence of diabetes, primarily of that which is not yet diagnosed. She shared with me a program that would not only help detect and manage certain aspects of diabetes, but that would also compensate those willing to join a research project that would also ultimately help others.
The screening is FREE and you do not have to have insurance to participate in the study, should you qualify. The study is a chance to help those in Appalachia/rural areas understand more about managing diabetes, and provide information so UK can continue to make strides in a disease that affects so many.
On Saturday, November 19th from 9-11 am we will be hosting the FREE screening where you will also have a chance (should you qualify) to participate in the research study which does include compensation. If you have already been diagnosed with diabetes, you are still welcome to come to the screening to learn more about how to manage certain aspects of diabetes and join the study.
As always, we'd ❤️ to see ya!

Getting a flu vaccine during 2020-2021 is more important than ever because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Flu vaccination is especially important for people with certain underlying medical conditions, like asthma, heart disease, and diabetes. People with these types of conditions are at higher risk of developing serious complications from flu. Many of these conditions also increase the risk for serious outcomes from COVID-19.
