Organization of Nurse Leaders

Organization of Nurse Leaders ONL is a not-for-profit membership organization empowering current and aspiring nurse leaders ONL began as MSNSA in 1976.

In 1985 the name was changed to MONE (Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives). In June of 2011, our new name, ONL was approved to more accurately reflect nurses' vital role as clinical leaders. Today ONL represents over 700 nursing leaders from diverse practices across the Commonwealth. Our members employ, manage, and influence in excess of 40,000 nurses and health care workers. Additionally, they administer operating budgets of over $1 billion annually. The mission of the Organization is to provide direction and leadership for the advancement of professional nursing and patient care and for the achievement of excellence in nursing management practice. ONL is an affiliate of the American Organization of Nurse Executives.

On behalf of ONL's Membership Committee, we invite you to join fellow nurse leaders in making a difference this holiday season by taking part in our Share the Warmth donation drive. To participate, please bring along new hats, gloves, mittens, or socks to donate at our Winter Quarterly Meeting. ONL will distribute them to shelters in need across our member states. We will have a monetary donation option available for those who wish to participate but are unable to bring physical goods along with them.

Nursing is a profession requiring intensive academic preparation and specialized disciplinary knowledge. Nurses practice in all settings where healthcare services are delivered, and professional nursing practice is critical to the health of millions of Americans. Any action that would limit access to funds for nurses to pursue advanced degrees is short-sighted and undermines efforts to build a strong and robust nursing workforce.

ONL appreciates the leadership of our colleagues and partners at national nursing organizationsโ€”American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), American Nurses Association, National League for Nursing, National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, American College of Nurse-Midwives โ€”who are representing the voice of nurses across the country as the credibility of our profession is under attack, and we join them in urging the Department of Education to revise the proposed definition of 'professional degrees' to explicitly include nursing.

Nurse Licensure Compact update: As of October 1st, Connecticut has fully implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)! This means that nurses with a multistate license can now practice in Connecticut, and Connecticut nurses can apply for a multistate license.

This is great news for nurses, patients, and communities throughout the region, and is an example of policy success achieved through persistent advocacy efforts and engagement! 10/24/2025

For the first time, nurse staffing has been elevated to a core element of patient safety within the Joint Commissionโ€™s National Performance Goals (NPG)! The newly added NPG 12 will require organizations to demonstrate compliance with policies and procedures related to nurse staffing, effective January 1, 2026. This important advancement is the result of work led by the National Nurse Staffing Task Force, facilitated by Dr. Katie Boston-Leary, and the American Nurses Association (ANA), and the vision and advocacy of so many nurse leaders.

At ONL, we applaud this development as a meaningful step toward elevating the vital connection between adequate nurse staffing, healthy work environments and patient outcomes. This regulatory approach to nurse staffing strengthens our collective ability to address nurse staffing through evidence-based, unit-level solutions rather than through state legislatures and state law. It also ensures nurses leaders are accountable for nurse staffing and will have the flexibility to meet the unique needs of their patient populations. We commend the ANA, the Joint Commission, and the many nurse leaders whose vision and advocacy made this milestone possible!
