Organization of Nurse Leaders

Organization of Nurse Leaders ONL is a not-for-profit membership organization empowering current and aspiring nurse leaders ONL began as MSNSA in 1976.

In 1985 the name was changed to MONE (Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives). In June of 2011, our new name, ONL was approved to more accurately reflect nurses' vital role as clinical leaders. Today ONL represents over 700 nursing leaders from diverse practices across the Commonwealth. Our members employ, manage, and influence in excess of 40,000 nurses and health care workers. Additionally, they administer operating budgets of over $1 billion annually. The mission of the Organization is to provide direction and leadership for the advancement of professional nursing and patient care and for the achievement of excellence in nursing management practice. ONL is an affiliate of the American Organization of Nurse Executives.

The Organization of Nurse Leaders โ€“ New England (ONL) stands in solidarity with the national nursing community in denouncing the fatal shooting by federal agents of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, BS, RN and in mourning the tragic loss of a fellow nurse.

Alex was a 37-year-old Intensive Care Nurse who worked at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System in Minnesota caring for military veterans and their families. We extend our most sincere sympathies to Alexโ€™s family, friends, patients, colleagues, the entire Minneapolis community, and all who are grieving this senseless and devastating loss.

Nurses have an ethical, moral, and professional duty to respond to people with compassion and respect for their inherent dignity and to give voice to and advocate for the rights, health, and safety of people and communities. These obligations apply regardless of background, political affiliation, or immigration status. According to provision 9.3 of the Code of Ethics for Nurses (https://codeofethics.ana.org/provisions), โ€œIt is the shared responsibility of all people and nurses in particular to articulate and advance the notions of good and health within a societyโ€ฆ A good society is one that treats everyone with respect and dignity, balances justice and compassion, and regards humanity without hierarchy.โ€ Further, provision 8.2 states, โ€œWhere there are human rights violations, nurses ought to and must stand up for those rights and demand accountability.โ€ Alex Pretti was living these values when he was killed.

ONL joins the national nursing community in a growing call for a full, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this devastating loss of life. Our colleagues at the American Nurses Association (ANA) are calling for action (https://ana.quorum.us/campaign/demandtruthforalex/), and we encourage all nurses to participate. ONL also stands ready to support our Minnesota colleagues in whichever ways might be helpful.

Nurses are advocates for the safety and well-being of their communities. Nurses enter this profession to heal, to protect human life, and to show up for people in their most vulnerable moments. ONL remains committed to promoting policies and practices that prevent violence in the workplace and in our communities and to advancing meaningful protections that safeguard healthcare workers and the public.
