Hopefully we are finally over all our heat waves and getting into the Fall season now. We at Whittier Pediatric Group want to make sure all our families know about a few important issues:

FLU and COVID VACCINES

Many of you are aware that vaccines definitely save lives – whether it’s Polio, Measles or different types of pneumonia and meningitis vaccines, we are all much better off with vaccine prevention than the real diseases. However, many of you may not be aware that vaccines have been used in England and Europe since the year 1800, starting with the smallpox vaccine!

We still do not have prevention against all infectious agents for our kids, but the scientists have developed a method to avoid or moderate against 2 of the most severe viruses: influenza and COVID. They are both approved for children 6 months and older and the updated bivalent COVID booster vaccine covering Omicron is approved for anyone 5 years old and older.

We are expecting a severe flu season this year (Australia’s Winter this June saw many flu cases) and a winter surge with COVID judging from the last 2 winters. Data showed that fully vaccinated children against COVID half their hospitalization rates due to COVID. In order to protect our patients in time for the Winter, we’ve expanded our hours to include 5 Saturdays for vaccines with the following appointment times:

Saturday 10/22/2022 8 am - 12:30 pm
Saturday 10/29/2022 8 am - 12:30 pm
Saturday 11/05/2022 8 am - 12:30 pm
Saturday 11/12/2022 8 am - 12:30 pm
Saturday 11/19/2022 8 am - 12:30 pm

Please call now to schedule the vaccines. The spacing between 1st and 2nd doses of the primary series of COVID vaccines should be 4 -8 weeks and the spacing for the bivalent booster after the 2 primary doses or a previous booster should be a minimum of 2 months. There are no boosters approved for 6 months to 4 years old yet.

HALLOWEEN

With many activities re-opening up again you may be taking your children out trick-or-treating.
Be sure to wear light colored clothing and/or outerwear/backpacks with reflector strips to avoid not being seen at night.
Be sure to check all the candies are in their original wraps before your children get to them.
For added protection, wear masks if you are going from door to door.

HAVE A FUN, HEALTHY AND SAFE FALL AND WINTER!

Parents Encouraged to Keep Children Up-to-Date on COVID Vaccinations:

Children under the age of 18 in LA County continue to be significantly impacted by COVID-19, with many who were infected experiencing serious illness or long COVID. To date, there have been 93,181 children under the age of 5, 261,797 children ages 5 to 11, and 256,540 children ages 12 to 17 confirmed with COVID-19.

While most children experience mild illness, there is no way to know in advance how children will be affected by COVID-19. Many children in LA County experienced serious illness and required hospitalization after becoming infected with COVID-19. To date, there have been 1,378 children under the age of 5, 684 children ages 5 to 11, and 1,165 children ages 12 to 17 with COVID-19 hospitalized.

Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are available to children 6 months to 17 years. The Moderna vaccine requires two doses, given four to eight weeks apart for children 6 months to 17 years. Boosters for the Moderna vaccine are not currently recommended. The Pfizer vaccine for children ages 6 months to 4 years requires three doses, with three to eight weeks in between the first and second dose, and at least eight weeks between the second and third doses. Boosters for the Pfizer vaccine are currently not recommended for children ages 6 months to 4 years.

The Pfizer vaccine for children ages 5 to 17 years requires two doses, with three to eight weeks in between the first and second dose. Boosters are recommended for this age group at least five months after the second dose. For more information, visit the COVID-19 Vaccine Schedule.

~ 6-months to 5-years-old on Tuesdays and Fridays
~ 6 to 11-years-old on Wednesdays

The primary series consist of 2 doses given 4-8 weeks apart. An individual is considered immune 2 weeks after the 2nd dose. The vaccine can be given with other vaccines, including influenza. Patients with positive COVID history may consider delaying the vaccine for 3 months.

6-months to 5-years-old will receive 1/4 of the adult dose for the primary series. No boosters have been approved yet.

6 to 11-years-old will receive 1/2 of the adult dose for the primary series. The only booster approved for 5 to 17-years-old is Pfizer. (5 to 11-years-old receive 1/3 of adult dose and 12-years-old and older receive regular full dose as Pfizer boosters.)

12-years-old and older will receive a full dose for the primary series. 18-years-old and older can receive Moderna or Pfizer as a booster dose - Moderna boosters are 1/2 of the primary series dosage.
