Freezing weather can create serious risks for residents who rely on oxygen, especially during power outages. Take steps now to prepare, protect your equipment, and stay safe.
Power Outage Preparedness
• Keep a backup oxygen supply for 24–72 hours, depending on medical need
• Know your oxygen system type (concentrator, liquid oxygen, or compressed gas)
• Identify warming centers, hospitals, or shelters that can support oxygen users
• Notify your electric utility if medical priority status is available
Cold Weather Equipment Safety
• Oxygen tubing can become stiff or brittle in freezing temperatures
• Avoid running tubing near exterior doors, windows, or unheated areas
• Store spare oxygen cylinders in a heated space, away from direct heat
Heating Safety
• Keep oxygen equipment at least 5 feet away from heat sources
• Do not place equipment near space heaters, fireplaces, gas stoves, or candles
