Emotional unavailability rarely looks like what people imagine. It doesn't always show up as coldness or indifference. A lot of the time it looks like someone who genuinely wants connection but keeps finding reasons it won't work, or someone who gives a lot of love while being very careful never to fully receive it.

Pulling away when things get real, nitpicking potential partners before they can get too close, staying busy whenever someone wants more of your heart, these aren't random habits. They're ways of protecting yourself from the vulnerability that comes with actually letting someone in. The tricky part is that they can feel completely rational from the inside.

Recognizing the pattern is the first and most important step.

Wonderfully said, and what a beautiful work of art! Happy Transgender Day of Visibility!!

This International Transgender Day of Visibility, we aren’t just "celebrating"—we are standing in active, fierce solidarity with our Trans family across the Sunflower State.

We see the weight you are carrying. We see the unjust and dehumanizing laws, like SB 244, that have been fast-tracked by lawmakers to target your basic rights—from your ability to hold a valid ID to your safety in public spaces. These laws are a direct assault on the dignity of our neighbors, friends, and family. They aim to foster fear and paranoia through "bounty hunter" systems and forced outings, but we know the truth: Your existence is not a violation; it is a vital, brilliant part of our community.

To the Trans Kansans feeling the pressure of this political climate: The Bender sees you, we honor you, and we value you. You are the resilient prairie grass that holds the soil together when the wind tries to blow it all away. We stand with you against these attacks on your autonomy and privacy.

Our doors are—and will always be—a sanctuary. You are safe here, you are celebrated here, and you will never have to hide who you are.

We will not be silent while our community is targeted. Join us in supporting the or Equality Kansas as they fight these laws in court. Let’s show our Trans family that Kansas is their home, too. 🌻️‍⚧️

What a great list!

What a great list!

These aren't ideals to aspire to when everything is going well. They're the baseline a relationship needs to actually function.

Mutual respect even during disagreements. Honesty even when the truth is uncomfortable. Consistent effort, not just effort when the relationship is on the line. Emotional safety to be vulnerable without fear of punishment. Accountability when mistakes happen instead of deflection and excuses. Space to be an individual without it threatening the relationship. Communication that's clear, kind, and ongoing.

These aren't negotiable. A relationship that's missing several of them isn't just difficult. It's unsustainable.

Do you know how often I have conversations with fellow therapists who tell me they feel like frauds because they're struggling with things in their lives too?

I'm going to cut and paste below a reply I sent to one of my gorgeous members (who is also a therapist) below, who shared with me that she felt as though she shouldn't be helping people in pain, when she was in pain herself. I said:

Consider this darling -

If you hired a qualified builder for a project at your house, and then found out they were working on remodels at their own home… would you think them unqualified for the job?

It’s more than okay to be working on your own stuff and experiencing your own struggles. Because you are a human being have a human experience. If you had no “issues” not only would you be very boring (haha) but you would have NO lived experience of struggle.

These challenges are your teachers. And they are asking you: “can you hold compassion and empathy for yourself in the face of a less than perfect experience?”

The big difference (and factor in your favour) is not that you have struggles - but that you have awareness of and insight into your struggles. You know them. You can identify them, so you know where your shadows are and how they come into play in your life and work.

Here’s another analogy; what if you heard a dentist say “I am supposed to be fixing peoples teeth - so how can I possibly have a hole in my own tooth?!”
What would you think of that?

You’re not at all alone on your path. You are in great company. The company of all therapists doing the brave work of shining lights on their own shadows while holding the torch for others.

Sending you deep breath, hugs from NZ, love and compassion

- Let me say too: of course, we therapists need to be sure we are doing our own work, practising ethically, not working outside our capacity etc. But, with all that tended to, we are not robots!

👉🏼 How do these words land in your nervous system as you read them?

👉🏼 How can you show yourself the kindness you show to others?

👉🏼 What if you gave yourself permission to be supported by others?

If you are looking for connection and activism!

At this Friday’s Craft & Yap, we will be decorating boxes! These boxes will be placed in local businesses where folks can drop hygiene and personal care items from March 21st - April 10th. At our April 11th Q***r Coffee Meetup, we will assemble these care packages to be distributed to our neighbors in need.

We will provide some construction paper, glue, markers, and more. Please feel free to bring more craft supplies to make these boxes beautiful! We’d love more paper, stickers, bedazzles, etc.

This mutual aid drive is in collaboration with our pal Bri Hammack!

When you admire something about another woman, tell her.
Tell her she looks beautiful. Tell her she is strong.
Tell her you love her energy, her kindness, her courage, her way of showing up in the world.
Sometimes the smallest words can become the biggest reminder that someone is seen, appreciated, and valued.

There is so much power in women uplifting women.
In a world that often encourages comparison, choosing support is something truly beautiful.
A genuine compliment costs nothing, yet it can soften someone’s day, heal a hidden insecurity, or give her confidence she didn’t even know she needed. That is never small. That is powerful.

Let’s be the kind of women who clap for each other, encourage each other, and remind each other of our worth.
Let’s create spaces where women feel safe to shine, to grow, to be fully themselves without fear of judgment or competition.

We do not lose anything by being kind. We do not become smaller by helping another woman feel powerful. In fact, we all rise together.

Today, on International Women’s Day, I want to celebrate every woman reading this.
Your softness is powerful. Your strength is beautiful. Your presence matters.

Keep going, keep glowing, and never forget how valuable you are.

Happy International Women’s Day to all the amazing women around the world. May we continue to lift each other up, today and every day. 🌷✨

Sending love your way 💖
Ivana

Some transgender Kansans are considering leaving the state after Republicans overrode a veto to pass the law.

Proud of everyone in the USA, and around the globe, for standing up at the No Kings movement. Silence is compliance, and the job of a systemic therapist is to speak about the oppressive and abusive systems that act as barriers to thriving. Community is ever more important. Take care of yourselves and your loved ones. Speak out against hate. More importantly, stay safe 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🇵🇸🇺🇦🇺🇸🌎
