Web Accessibility is a non-negotiable for us at Captain Coder.

Honestly, I don't care what the project is; we're going to do it the right way. Does that mean sometimes people "get more than what they pay for?" Sure, I guess. But I believe that what we do matters. What we put on the internet matters. And there's no point putting things out there, promoting your business or school, if not everyone in your audience can access it.

(Yes, I am a perfectionist. Why do you ask? 🙃)

You want your business to grow online. The only way for that to happen is for you to have the right foundation. Whether that's in your website, your social media, or any other digital marketing you put out there. If my team is involved, we're going to ensure that nothing you put out there will make someone else's life harder.

Those of us who work in accessibility just want to provide equal access to the internet. This means regardless of background or disabilities.

I'm sure objectively you understand that not a single human is the same as another. And yet, our systems are set up for conformity that does not exist.

My accessibility work helps those with different abilities easily access the internet. That includes your blind and deaf friends, but also those who have hearing loss because of their jobs. It includes ensuring images and content are legible to people with color blindness. It means not creating designs that can trigger epilepsy symptoms. It means helping those with dyslexia or ADHD read your content.

Everything I do to improve web accessibility helps make a website easier for everyone else.

Do you know what's crazy to me? I've been working in accessibility since 2013, and I've only seen people start to care in the last couple of years. You know why? Because of DEIA initiatives.

DEIA has helped us get wins like ramps instead of stairs, medical studies that include women and people of color, and yes, improvements to the web.

Let's be good people and work together to provide fair access.

Not having an accessible website can cost you big in legal settlements.

According to Usable Net's tracking of digital ADA lawsuits, 233 new suits were filed in July 2024 alone.

233 in one month.

Of those 233, 102 were against companies that have been sued for digital accessibility problems before. That means they didn't fix the issues the first time around.

Even more concerning, 62 of those suits were filed against companies using a third-party widget to "fix" their accessibility.

The harsh truth is that you can’t just download and pay a subscription to fix this problem. It has to be fixed correctly. Your website and digital assets must be built correctly to provide the best experience for everyone.

Your university has always had to follow specific ADA guidelines, but new rules affecting your website were published on April 24, 2024. Are you ready?

This year, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) solidified the requirement for state and local government entities, including universities, to provide equal access to individuals with disabilities through their websites. While universities have two years from publication (April 24, 2026) to comply with these new rules, this isn’t something you can wait for.

Most university websites are large, and in my experience, many people are involved in keeping them current.

It's the first week of another semester!

Since 2020, I've been teaching Digital Marketing at Wichita State and loving it. I love sharing the strategies that drive consumer decisions online and seeing my students put together some pretty impressive ideas.

Last year, we added a Web Strategies class that allows me to explore the art of creating amazing websites and doing it accessibleibly!

I love sharing everything I've seen change (and NOT change!) over the last 20 years I've worked in marketing. Sharing, teaching, and seeing students grow is a unique experience.

Here's to many more years of it!

Does the new ADA regulation apply to you?

The answer is yes if you're a public entity - local or state. And yes, that means you, my university friends.

We must provide an excellent experience for all our students, regardless of their abilities. This is hitting home as I start another semester teaching at Wichita State. I often have students with different needs, so I'm thankful Title II is implementing some new regulations.

The good news is that you have until April 24, 2026 to get compliant.

The bad news? It can take awhile to get there.

Here's what you need to know:

✅ All websites, digital course materials, mobile apps, and assets uploaded to those sites must be accessible.

✅ You largely need to provide alternatives for content, i.e. text alternatives to videos and images.

✅ Your website needs to be set up for anyone to use via a keyboard or assistive technologies.

✅ This is going to be an investment.

Stop worrying about accessibility and start taking action. You've got less than 2 years to get compliant, so it's time to start the conversation with your management and begin creating more accessible content NOW.
