I hear often in my office from people that when they lay down at night they cant get to sleep because they cant “turn their mind off.”

Because we are always busy, we often never take time throughout the day to dedicate to worry or internal distress. We fail to intentionally notice and acknowledge all the thoughts, feelings and worries inside ourselves. Therefore, at night, when we lay down and it’s quiet our minds start thinking, “Oh finally, nows my time.”

Dumping your brain onto paper before bed can help with sleep.

Your mind was made to have ideas, not hold them.

If it lives in your head, it multiplies.

If it lives on paper, it gets managed.

Clarity begins the moment you externalize your thoughts.

MAKING A HOME FOR JOY
Pleasure and feeling just right is a domain deep inside of each of us. Whenever we have nice things going on around us - like in this photo when I sat on the beach in Nicaragua and took in the sights, sounds and feelings of the ocean - we can choose to do one of two things. One, we can pass it over, and return to our left brain and zip back into the hurry of our day, or two, we can let it in…..take in and appreciate the moment and allow the deep pleasure of what we observe going on both around us and in our bodies as we notice what is happening and gradually allowing and giving that feeling more space on the inside. It’s a kind of attention that softens the edges of the place where the pleasure originates, as if we are letting down the dam for the flooding to take place. Don’t let these moments in your day pass you by. Slow down, take it in, and allow the happiness to ripple into the darkest corners inside yourself and let the experience wash them clean. Moments like this in life are fleeting, so don’t waste them!!! Instead let them nourish and energize you so that you can continue your journey with a spring in your step.

I’m a therapist and I’m not ashamed to admit….

1. My anger part sometimes gets the best of me and drives my bus.
2. My perfect part places a lot of pressure on me creating an internal environment inside myself that rarely allows me to celebrate what I’ve done well.
3. I have a part of me that uses sugar to comfort me and doesn’t respond well internally to the word “No.”
4. I have a history of an abusive marriage and I developed unhealthy relationship patterns during this relationship that I still struggle with today at times.
5. Once in awhile my ovethinker part stresses out about how I was during a therapy session and sends me messages internally that “I’m not good enough” and “you should quit and do something else because your not good at this.”As a therapist, I think it’s important to remind people that I, too, am human and I have internal battles and struggles. Life is an ever changing journey and we never have it all figured out.

Recovering from Complex Trauma can feel like a battle against a fire-breathing dragon. You may feel like you are doing your best to manage your symptoms and yet you’re just moving from one burning fire to another which feels like a never-ending battle.

But it isn’t. There is no dragon. What you are truly experiencing are symptoms that are signal flares.
