Everyone can be great, because everybody can serve.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

On this MLK Day of Service, Sedgwick County RSVP volunteers, part of AmeriCorps Seniors, honored Dr. King’s legacy by serving local students through the Food 4 Kids Program. Volunteers packed 50 boxes and 400 bags of food that go home with school children on Fridays, helping to ensure they have food over the weekend. Thank you for turning service into impact!

A heartfelt act of kindness from one of the many wonderful RSVP volunteers in our community.

If you or someone you know is 55+ and interested in volunteering through the Sedgwick County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), call 316-660-5120.

The Sedgwick County RSVP Volunteer Program is part of AmeriCorps Seniors and represents the nation’s largest volunteer network for individuals age 55 and older. At Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, seven RSVP volunteers staff the information desk, assisting travelers with directions and connecting them to the Wichita community.

On a particularly cold day last month, a passenger arrived at ICT wearing only jeans and a T-shirt. As he stood shivering at the curb, RSVP volunteer Tonia Van Arsdale noticed and immediately offered him her coat. After warming up, the passenger returned with the coat, but Tonia gently insisted, “I have another coat at home. You keep that one.”

This simple yet powerful act of kindness exemplifies compassion at its finest and turned a difficult moment into an opportunity to create a true raving fan. We are deeply grateful that Tonia chooses to volunteer at the airport. Her dedication and genuine care for ICT passengers make a meaningful difference every day.
