Kansas Health Foundation

Kansas Health Foundation Our mission is to improve the health of all Kansans. But, it’s only possible with a broad network of effective partnerships across the state.

We are an organization full of dedicated individuals who work every day to improve health in the state of Kansas. We dream big, promote bold visions and truly believe that it’s possible for Kansas to someday lead the nation in health. We work closely with other health foundations, nonprofit groups, community foundations, state agencies, universities, hospitals, communities and advisory groups to develop programs and initiatives and to find answers to complex health issues. And we will continue to form and strengthen partnerships with more Kansas organizations and communities. Our work has continued for nearly 40 years, and we’re currently in the midst of an exciting new challenge. We invite you to view the information below to learn about our strategic framework, our history and our dynamic team.

No one sector, organization or institution can end hunger in Kansas. Not alone.

But together, we can and we will.

Hunger Free Kansas is highlighting strategies from the Blueprint for a Hunger-Free Kansas during Hunger Action Month in September. Follow along on Facebook!

In February, we joined advocates, farmers, policymakers and more at Kansas Health Foundation's FuseKS convening to tackle the issue of food insecurity in our state.

Alongside extensive analysis, listening sessions and public comments, more than 100 experts came together to refine our goals and strategies and create a Blueprint for a Hunger Free Kansas.

In 1985, Wesley Hospital was sold to Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), and the funds were used to seed the Wesley Medical Endowment fund, known today as the Kansas Health Foundation.

Our mission to lead the nation in health by improving the health of all Kansans is a direct reflection of our 40-year history.

Candace Malone, Community Impact Associate at KHF, outlines some of the ways nonprofits might be able to support each other to build sustainability:

→ Are you a food bank with space for the local clothing closet to operate and store donations?

→ Can you write collaborative grant proposals with other related nonprofits in your community?

→ Do you have influence in your community that you can activate to support fellow nonprofits?

What are some ways your nonprofit reaches out to support others?

One of the best ways to support other nonprofits is to share your strengths, help make connections and collaborate.

When we surveyed our partners, upward mobility rose to the top as one of the most important issues impacting the people they serve. And the data agreed.

A person’s financial situation has an outsized impact on their health. Income affects people’s ability to afford safe housing, buy healthy food, pay for doctors’ appointments and medication, save for retirement and more.

That's why we selected Upward Mobility as our next major health challenge to tackle.

Tremendous projects are happening at KHF right now, and we tap into the collective wisdom of our Design Team to transform ideas into reality.

Our quarterly Design Retreats bring collaborators and partners together to dig into ideas, challenge the status quo and learn from each other.

We can accomplish great things with a great team. And we've got one.

This is the power of a network.

Our partners came together last month to build cohesion, learn new strategies and align behind our common goals to make progress on tough issues, faster.

PE TEACHERS USE TECHNOLOGY TO PUMP UP PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Technology has made physical activity in schools even easier and with more options with “PE Kansas.” This free, Kansas State Department of Education web-based K-12 physical education curriculum tool has seen overwhelming support from teachers all across the world.

Since launching in mid-January, nearly 5,400 users have accessed the online curriculum – including 1,161 from Kansas, along with individuals from each state and 38 countries across the world. Thirty Kansas communities have had 10 or more users, and about half of these communities are in rural parts of the state.

“The Kansas Health Foundation (KHF) saw the importance of quality physical education years ago and invested in the development of the Physical Essentials, Physical Focus, and Physical Dimensions curriculum. This resulted in a huge curriculum in both content and physical volume,” said Mark Thompson, KSDE project facilitator. “The most logical means of assuring universal access to the curriculum was to develop a website to house the content. Thus, PE Kansas was created.”

A team of educators and professionals reviewed the old curriculum, transforming physical education in Kansas in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, according to the website. From there, new activities and focuses were added, and the old content was either kept, removed, or modernized, and updated in a digital, drop-in lesson plan format that helps educators understand how to put together developmentally appropriate, standards-based lessons.
