We work closely with other health foundations, nonprofit groups, community foundations, state agencies, universities, hospitals, communities and advisory groups to develop programs and initiatives and to find answers to complex health issues. And we will continue to form and strengthen partnerships with more Kansas organizations and communities. Our work has continued for nearly 40 years, and we’re currently in the midst of an exciting new challenge. The 30,000 Kansans we talk about in Leading Health are in key authority roles with the ability to focus attention and budgets on health challenges.

Here are just a few examples:

→ A business owner trying to reduce costs while keeping employee benefits the same.
→ An elected official considering next year's budget.
→ A manager trying to get to the bottom of absenteeism.
→ A nonprofit board member working to improve their organization's effectiveness.

These Kansans have collective influence on factors that affect health, like economic and education conditions. We can’t guarantee equal results, but we should guarantee a fair shot.

The Health Fund is proud to have joined forces with three other health foundations — Kansas Health Foundation, Sunflower Foundation and REACH Healthcare Foundation — to provide more than $380,000 to state food banks and pantries.

They provide a vital service to Kansans, but their resources have been greatly strained due to recent higher demand.

“Kansans are struggling to put food on their tables right now, and it’s important we help where we can in the short term,” said David Jordan, Health Fund president and CEO.

In the last 30 years, no state has fallen further than Kansas in America's Health Rankings.

In Kansas Health Institute's 'What Happened to Health in Kansas?' report, authors wrote: "Kansas’ health ranking decline reflects deeply rooted structural and cultural dynamics, not simply individual behaviors or programmatic gaps. Turning the tide will require a fundamental shift in how health is prioritized and pursued."

Kansas’ health ranking had one of the steepest declines in the nation in the past 30 years, according to a study that sought to identify potential reasons and fixes for the state’s downward slide.

"I'm grateful and energized by the number of Kansans willing to contribute to improving health, despite the daunting nature of the task. Change on this scale requires many hands, and I'm constantly energized by the number of Kansans willing to contribute." – Drew Wilburne, Director of Civic Life and Policy

The major health challenges we focus on require multi-sector collaboration and new ways of thinking. We're so thankful for the people and organizations across Kansas working together to tackle them.

PE TEACHERS USE TECHNOLOGY TO PUMP UP PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Technology has made physical activity in schools even easier and with more options with “PE Kansas.” This free, Kansas State Department of Education web-based K-12 physical education curriculum tool has seen overwhelming support from teachers all across the world.

Since launching in mid-January, nearly 5,400 users have accessed the online curriculum – including 1,161 from Kansas, along with individuals from each state and 38 countries across the world. Thirty Kansas communities have had 10 or more users, and about half of these communities are in rural parts of the state.

“The Kansas Health Foundation (KHF) saw the importance of quality physical education years ago and invested in the development of the Physical Essentials, Physical Focus, and Physical Dimensions curriculum. This resulted in a huge curriculum in both content and physical volume,” said Mark Thompson, KSDE project facilitator. “The most logical means of assuring universal access to the curriculum was to develop a website to house the content. Thus, PE Kansas was created.”

A team of educators and professionals reviewed the old curriculum, transforming physical education in Kansas in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, according to the website. From there, new activities and focuses were added, and the old content was either kept, removed, or modernized, and updated in a digital, drop-in lesson plan format that helps educators understand how to put together developmentally appropriate, standards-based lessons.
