The Two Monitors Problem

The stress of working in an office environment can increase if you are working with two or more computer monitors. Some companies try to improve productivity by giving their employees multiple monitors . The problems this causes is usually more neck and upper back tension. This can lead to headaches, neck and upper back pain and spasms . Our bodies are designed to look straight ahead without any stress. But, if we turn our head 5-10 degrees for 10-15 minutes then our neck and shoulders will start to tighten. Do this for 6-7 hours a day, 235-260 work days a year, then you have even more of a problem.
So what can help your two monitors problem?One giant screen monitor (good luck with that request), focusing work on one monitor straight in front of you and use the second monitor as a reference monitor only (not perfect but it can reduce your stress), or you can grow another head.

"Your hand is not a hammer!"

I was treating a patient this week and that was his favorite mantra. The man works as an auto mechanic. He realized that over the years if he wants to have longevity in his job then he needs to stop pounding metal parts or tires with his palms, just to save time from grabbing a rubber mallet. His hands are swollen and numb and they tingle. He also has trouble doing miniscule work and this didn't happen overnight. It's a great reminder to work smarter but not harder. You can't work if you can't use the tools that God gave you. I treated him with Chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture treatments reducing swelling, pain and numbness, and increase blood and nerve flow to the hand. It's a great alternative to surgery, because changing your job may not be an option and you don't want to say that you had carpal tunnel surgery on a job interview.

Of course these people can use this mantra, "your hand is a hammer!"

Can you be too flexible?

For most of us, the answer is no. You are about as flexible as you will ever be when you are born. Then it goes downhill from there. If you don't stretch regularly then you are going downhill faster than others. Good flexibility means better range of motion and good blood flow. Greater flexibility decreases joint stress. Increasing flexibility can decrease your likelihood of injuries from falls, sports, and repetitive movement. Misalignment in your spine can decrease your flexibility by causing your muscles to overcompensate. Chiropractic adjustments and proper stretching can realign your spine and improve flexibility. How low can you go?

The key to preventing lower leg and feet problems like plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, and restless leg syndrome are good calf and ankle flexibility. An easy way to check your flexibility and also stretch is to squat all the way down on your feet and see if you are able to balance with both heels on the ground and not just on the balls of your feet. Not having good flexibility decreases blood circulation, nerve impulse, and muscle and ligament tightness that leads to foot and lower leg problems. If it has gotten too painful to squat then some alternative care like ankle manipulations, therapeutic ultrasound, and acupuncture can get you back to being able to squat.

Why sleep is so important

Sleep is the only time of the day when we let our body's spend 100% of it's energy on maintenance and recovery. Sleep is when we process, digest, absorb, and eliminate stuff we ingest that day. Think of it as collecting things throughout the day and just throwing it in the house. Then, at night we organize it, put it where it should go, repair any damage, and eliminate stuff we don't need. So, when we don't sleep well then we start having a back log on organization and repairs. The longer we go without good sleep the more problems we start developing. Driving with the engine light on?

We may not realize it, but most of us drive with the engine light on when it comes to our body. Our body's give warning signs through aches, pain, burning, or numbness when we over use it or injure it. Most of the time we can get a good nights sleep and let our body heal itself . This is like forgetting to tighten your gas cap after a fill up, which can trigger your engine light to come on. The more serious problem is when your symptoms affect your sleep. This is when your engine light starts flashing, your car loses some power, or a grinding noise comes from the engine. Proper body maintenance (stretching, diet, sleep, good hygiene, and an occasional adjustment) can keep you going smoothly. Unlike our cars, we can't just buy a new body when our old body is used up. We can now get some new parts, but the new is never as good as the original. So what kind of car are you?

I have some patients that are trying to actively do 2015 miles in 2015 solo. I think they are absolutely amazing and a little nuts. Here is the challenge website, http://www.runtheedge.com/2015-in-2015-headquarters/. This means that they are trying to run, jog, elliptical, or walk their way about 40 miles each week. That's a lot of wear and tear on your hips, knees, shins, ankles, and feet. They need a proper diet, regular hydration, everyday stretching, chiropractic adjustments to keep their joints inline, therapy to keep the inflammation down, and a cheerleader to keep them going through the snow, rain, wind, and 100 degrees weather.
Personally, I'm here to root for all the 2015er. The only way I can even dream ( it would be a dream) of running that much is by wearing a vest made of raw bacon (mmm bacon) and being chase by a pack of hungry dogs. Of course the running is only from tree to tree with an outdoor grill (mmm bacon).

Perverse wind
With all the cold weather we have been having it's important to remember to cover your neck. In acupuncture, when the wind blows across your neck causing it to spasm, we call that a "perverse wind". The spasms can trigger headaches, neck pain, and add to your stress.
