When violent incidents in communities circulate online the psychological toll on viewers, especially youth and marginalized populations, can be intense. These events are no longer confined to a specific geographic area; instead, they are broadcast widely, often without warning, through social media platforms. This constant exposure to trauma can heighten anxiety, fear, helplessness, and in many cases, contribute to feelings of despair and suicidal ideation.
Remember to take a break and check in with your loved ones. Sedgwick County COMCARE would like to remind you of these 4 tips you should follow when helping someone in need.
Listen to what your loved one is saying. Talk openly and nonjudgmentally. Let them know you care and be present in the moment.
Connect with mental health resources in your community.
Ask how you can help.
Remember to take care of yourself as well. Do something that reduces your stress such as going on a walk, taking deep breaths, coloring and more.
Remember help is always available! Call 9-8-8 and you will be connected with a trained cris call taker who is ready to listen to you.
