Planning an unmedicated birth in the hospital?

As patients, we have to be good detectives to figure out if our provider is the right fit for our birth

🚩 Watch out for these red flags when choosing your OB:

❌ “I don’t like doulas.”
A provider who’s uncomfortable with you having support in the room may not be comfortable with you having a voice, either.

❌ “We’ll just see how it goes.”
Vague answers often signal a lack of commitment to your unmedicated birth goals.

❌ “We don’t allow anyone to go past 40 weeks.”
Rigid policies can lead to pressure and unnecessary intervention.

❌ Dismisses your birth plan or skips over it entirely.
If they’re not interested in your plan now, they’re not likely to follow it later.

Unmedicated birth in a hospital is absolutely possible—but only when you’re surrounded by the right team.

✨ Trust your gut. Ask the hard questions. And don’t be afraid to switch providers if something feels off.

Doulas support alllllll types of birth…
so what does it mean when I say I’m a hospital birth doula? ⬇️

The large MAJORITY (98-99%!) of births in the U.S. happen in hospitals, not at home or in birth centers.

👉🏻That means most women are navigating interventions, routines, and policies designed for medical models — not necessarily for their personal birth goals.

Think of it like walking into a Taco Bell asking for sushi! 😉 the system just isn’t designed for physiologic birth.

But here’s another eye-opener:

Even though many women WANT extra support, only about 6–10% of moms actually hire a doula

That leaves MOST women going into labor without someone trained to protect their voice and support their birthing preferences in that hospital setting

This gap matters — because having a doula is linked with more spontaneous vaginal births, fewer unplanned cesareans, less fear, and higher satisfaction with the experience!!

And that’s exactly what I mean when I say I’m a hospital birth doula —
I show up where most births happen, and I help you navigate that system with confidence, clarity, and advocacy on your side so

👏🏻 You don’t have to worry about remembering everything from your childbirth class (although you should still take one!)

👏🏻 You won’t have to wonder what your options are

👏🏻 And your partner can show up for you fully present with support that better helps them support YOU 🤍

I am constantly amazed by women...

I get a front row seat to the quiet strength it takes to keep going when birth asks more of you than you ever knew you had within you to give.

I watch women learn to trust their instincts, make brave decisions in real time, and discover a version of themselves they didn’t know was already there.

It’s never about just having a baby. 💁🏼‍♀️

It’s about witnessing this mama step fully into her power, her voice, and her ability to move through something hard with courage and support.

No two births ever look the same, but the thing that always leaves me in awe is this:

Women are so much more capable than they’ve been led to believe.

And I get to watch that truth unfold over and over again.

Best job ever. 🤍

I love low-intervention birth.
Which is exactly why I tell my clients to remove
“no unnecessary interventions” from their birth plan.

Because here’s the truth 👇
Anything offered to you in labor will always be framed as necessary.

And what one provider considers necessary,
another might never recommend at all.

Low-intervention birth isn’t about rejecting care.
It’s about you being the one to decide which interventions actually support your goals, beliefs, and values for this birth.

✨ You deserve true informed consent.
✨ You deserve informed choice.
✨ You deserve informed refusal.

I break this down step-by-step in my FREE low-intervention birth guide, including my 3 non-negotiables for hospital birth.

Unbiased education? I try…but at the end of the day you deserve to know exactly what you’re getting here 😉

This is how I personally view and approach birth…But here’s what’s also real:

98–99% of women in the U.S. are giving birth in hospitals.

And most of them aren’t trying to avoid the hospital.

They just want a low-intervention experience inside it.

So that’s who I support.

Women who want a physiologic birth

🚫 without feeling dismissed.

🚫 without feeling like they have to defend themselves

🚫 without feeling pressured into decisions

You don’t need to birth in your living room to want autonomy 💁🏼‍♀️

If you’re planning a hospital birth but hoping to keep it low-intervention,
I made something for you 🤍

Here’s the thing—mossstttttt of the time second babies come much quicker.

But there’s always exceptions to the rule, and this birth was one of them 🥲😅

This is a story from one of my first births I supported as a doula nearly two years ago!

And still. I will forever be impressed by the strength, dedication, and perseverance this mama displayed on that incredibly long day.

The final photo of her roaring her baby out is still one of my favorites, and I think it will always be!

What a perfect display of the fierce strength in motherhood. Women. Are. Warriors. 👏🏻

This is what advocacy can actually look like in labor.

Not yelling.
Not arguing.
Not “being difficult.”

Just asking one clarifying question…
and calmly standing by your answer.

When someone says “we have to”, it’s okay to pause and ask why.

"Parroting" is one of the childbirth advocacy skills I teach my clients to remain calm and in control of their labor -- especially when they're tired and don't want to have a full conversation.

You can do this by simply repeating what you said over and over (calmly) until the message is heard.

P.S. Yes — this is a learned skill! Start practicing NOW, during pregnancy, at the pediatrician, etc. and if you'd like help learning more techniques specific to low-intervention hospital birth, check out my online birth advocacy e-course in bio!

Dads truly make the best advocates in childbirth.

One of the stories that I reference all the time when explaining that to my families comes from the birth of baby C.

Most of us know that “purple pushing” is not always the best way to push your baby out.

It increases pressure in your abdomen and in your pelvic floor, leading to issues like decreased fetal oxygenation and hemorrhoids.

BUT it’s statistically the fastest way to push your baby out which is why it’s the default method of pushing often taught in hospitals

This mama knew she wanted better.

So when the time came for pushing, the nurse starts to explain “purple pushing” technique to my clients.

Here’s where that advocacy piece comes in…

Dad got curious.

He said “wasn’t there another type of pushing we could try?”

And their nurse immediately said “of course!”

And then went on to help explain the other pushing technique to this family.

👉🏻👉🏻 you see, sometimes that’s all it takes. A little curiosity to discover all of your options and put the power back into your hands.
