Health Focus: Degenerative Disc Disease

Disc degeneration is the natural, age-related wear-and-tear of spinal discs. As this occurs, the discs lose hydration, shrink and become less flexible. When degeneration causes instability, numbness or radiating pain, the condition is considered degenerative disc disease.

Degenerative disc disease is typically treated through nonsurgical options, including physical therapy, exercise and pain management, focusing on relieving symptoms and improving mobility. In some cases, spine surgery can also provide relief.
