Rita J. Goss, Ph.D.

Rita J. Goss, Ph.D. I provide therapy and counseling for small children, teens, adults, couples, and families to help create a more positive and brighter tomorrow.

I acquired my Ph.D. at the University of Kansas, focusing on general Clinical Psychology with a sub specialty in child and family psychology. A Kansas native, I have served the children and families of Kansas in an agency setting for 6 years and in my own private practice since 1985. Although I have a great deal of training in working with children, especially children under six, I like workiing

with people of all ages. I particularly like working with those who are recovering from trauma. I provide therapy and counseling services for preschoolers, children and teens, adults, couples, families, and seniors. I also provide some evaluation services. My office accepts insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and I am willing to work with my clients on payment. My home office is a relaxed, private, and comfortable environment where you can feel supported as you work on new skills and life patterns that can take you to a brighter tomorrow.

Dear Rita J. Goss,
It took me years to comprehend that nearly all of the problems I experienced in my relationships with my NeuroDiverse loved ones could be explained by Empathy Dysfunction (EmD). Once I got it that they were not using empathy to understand the world and the people around them, I was able to navigate the gummed up communications among us.

People on the Autism Spectrum have Zero Degrees of Empathy (EmD-0) so their reality is built from a different set of mapping tools. While we run everything through our understanding of others in relationship to ourselves, they run everything through a fantastic list of “factoids.” How often have you heard your “Asperger” partner tell you that they “heard every word”? Maybe, but did they really process the meaning?

Empathy helps shape the meaning of communication, the meaning of our relationships, the meaning of the choices we NTs make. For an “Aspie” there may be no meaning if the facts don’t add up.

Special Webinar for Course Members
In my new course, "ASPERGER SYNDROME" & Relationships, course members can join me for my monthly webinar. The exciting thing is that both NeuroDiverse and NeuroTypical get to mingle at this webinar. It's important to keep learning about how the other person thinks if you are to build successful communication.

The Shock of Discovery --- When Your Parent is on the Spectrum
Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 4 pm Pacific Time

When I realized that I was raised by a mother on the Autism Spectrum, I was shocked, but also so many pieces of my life fell into place. Many of you are making a similar discovery --- only after you have married and raised children of your own.

Slowly waking up to your own autism or your partner's or your child's is one thing. But realizing that who you are was shaped by an autistic parent --- and in a NeuroDivergent family --- well this can be quite an identity crisis, can't it?
