Congratulations to our own Larksfield resident Carolyn Carter, who was named 2026 Alumna of the Year at Hutchinson Community College! We're so proud of Carolyn and share her joy in this honor! As Carolyn says, “Follow your passion, even during difficult times. The next opportunity may be hidden in those challenges. Always look for ways to be a helper in this world.” larksfield.org
Congratulations to Carolyn Carter, the 2026 Alumna of the Year.
Carolyn Carter’s journey toward a meaningful career in nursing and a life of service began in a small rural community in Rice County near Saxman, Kansas. Raised by a mother who was a nurse and a father who farmed the land, her early years were grounded in hard work, strong family values, and resilience.
Carolyn began her educational journey at Hutchinson Community College, balancing classes while working as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She earned her Associate of Arts degree in 1979, building a strong foundation for her future in nursing. She later completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master’s in Nursing at Wichita State University.
Throughout her career, Carolyn served in a variety of impactful roles, including ICU nursing, public health, and leadership positions in hospice and home care. She was among the first trained in HIV education and counseling in Kansas and played a key role in community health initiatives and program development.
A lifelong supporter of education, Carolyn has been a dedicated donor to the HutchCC Endowment and established the Dorothy Leonard Memorial Scholarship in honor of her mother. This scholarship supports full-time, non-traditional students accepted into the HutchCC Nursing Program.
Now retired, Carolyn remains active in her community and continues to embody a spirit of service. Her advice to students: pursue your passion, embrace lifelong learning, and always look for ways to help others.
