Congratulations to our own Larksfield resident Carolyn Carter, who was named 2026 Alumna of the Year at Hutchinson Community College! We're so proud of Carolyn and share her joy in this honor! As Carolyn says, “Follow your passion, even during difficult times. The next opportunity may be hidden in those challenges. Always look for ways to be a helper in this world.” larksfield.org

Congratulations to Carolyn Carter, the 2026 Alumna of the Year.

Carolyn Carter’s journey toward a meaningful career in nursing and a life of service began in a small rural community in Rice County near Saxman, Kansas. Raised by a mother who was a nurse and a father who farmed the land, her early years were grounded in hard work, strong family values, and resilience.
Carolyn began her educational journey at Hutchinson Community College, balancing classes while working as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She earned her Associate of Arts degree in 1979, building a strong foundation for her future in nursing. She later completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master’s in Nursing at Wichita State University.
Throughout her career, Carolyn served in a variety of impactful roles, including ICU nursing, public health, and leadership positions in hospice and home care. She was among the first trained in HIV education and counseling in Kansas and played a key role in community health initiatives and program development.
A lifelong supporter of education, Carolyn has been a dedicated donor to the HutchCC Endowment and established the Dorothy Leonard Memorial Scholarship in honor of her mother. This scholarship supports full-time, non-traditional students accepted into the HutchCC Nursing Program.
Now retired, Carolyn remains active in her community and continues to embody a spirit of service. Her advice to students: pursue your passion, embrace lifelong learning, and always look for ways to help others.

Congratulations to our Spring Graduation Award Winners! Karen Griffin, Outstanding Student

Karen is graduating with her Master of Health Administration (MHA). She earned her bachelor's degree in Exercise Science in 2006 while playing volleyball at Wichita State University and later returned to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2009, going on to build her career in nursing.

She began as a pediatric nurse in the hospital setting, followed by a role in home infusion, before finding her passion in senior living. Karen currently serves as Vice President of Health Services at Larksfield Place Retirement Community, where she is deeply passionate about aging services and the people she has the privilege to serve and work alongside each day. She values building strong relationships with residents and staff and is committed to creating an environment that supports connection, purpose, and an enhanced quality of life.

After graduating, Karen plans to continue in her leadership role at Larksfield Place, applying the knowledge and perspective gained through her MHA program to further elevate care and strengthen the impact of the community she serves.

Outside of work and school, she enjoys traveling somewhere warm with her husband, spending time on the golf course, and caring for their two mini Bernedoodles.

LARKSFIELD CAMPUS-WIDE PROJECT:
FLOCK OF BIRDS MURAL
Over the past two months, residents across the Larksfield community from Independent Living, Health Care, Assisted Living and Memory Support and students from Wichita Collegiate School created one of a kind birds with collage papers to display flying in formation. This fun and creative project brought folks together who don't usually make art and inspired seasoned artists to make something new. The display is stopping visitors and residents in their tracks to take a closer look. Come see the growing flock near the Independent Living front desk through the end of May. larksfield.org

Check out this intrepid group of explorers! Larksfield Place Independent Living residents had a beautiful day for their Cowley County bridge tour! They joined host Gary Gackstatter and took to the backroads of Cowley County to visit several of its historic stone arch bridges. Cowley was named the "Stone Bridge Capital of Kansas" in 2016 to honor the eighteen bridges in the county, all built between 1890-1913. larksfield.org

Our Easter weekend at Larksfield Place was one for the books! 🌸
We kicked off the season with a beautiful Good Friday Service, preparing our hearts for a weekend filled with joy, community, and tradition.
🐣 Saturday’s Easter Egg Extravaganza
Our Health Care Center was buzzing with "Spring Energy" for our annual Easter Egg Hunt! It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces, including our residents, their families, staff members' children, and many excited grandkids.
The day was packed with:
• 📸 Photos with the Easter Bunny
• 🏃‍♂️ Easter Games: High-stakes Bunny Hops and Egg Races.
• Balloon Twister : Making festive hats and flowers.
• 🍭 Sweet Treats
• 🎶 Live Music: A fantastic performance by our favorite one-man band that kept everyone’s toes tapping!
🕊️ A Peaceful Easter Sunday
We concluded our celebrations on Sunday morning with the ethereal sound of a live harpist, following by a moving Easter Service. Chaplain Amy led us in reflection. It was the perfect, serene end to a weekend focused on faith and community involvement.
